We’ve been told on a number of occasions that the Nintendo Switch has only just reached the middle of its life-cycle thanks to outstanding sales momentum, so when can we expect a next-generation system? Read on…
Speaking to Nikkei, Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furukawa has explained how a successor to the Nintendo Switch will need to be able to offer “new forms of entertainment”. This doesn’t exactly come as a surprise given Nintendo’s history and its drive to innovate.
Furukawa reiterated how Nintendo is “constantly researching” new technologies, and the decision to commercialise new hardware all depends on if a product can create a “new” experience.
“The hardware and software development teams are in the same building, communicating closely and thinking about how we can propose new forms of entertainment.
“In order to create a single piece of hardware, we have to do a lot of preparation several years in advance, so we are working without stopping. In the end, the deciding factor in whether or not to commercialise a product is whether it can create a new experience.”
As of 31st December 2021, the Switch has shifted 103.54 million units worldwide since its launch in 2017 – setting the record as the fastest-selling console to exceed the 100 million mark.
During a Q&A session at Nintendo’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing last November, Furukawa reinforced the Switch was here to stay – explaining how the hybrid device had the ability to exceed the “conventional hardware lifecycle”:
