Nightwing’s Tom Taylor Reveals a Callback to a Sentimental Batman Moment

[ad_1]

DC writer Tom Taylor draws attention to a Batman Annual #3 Easter egg hidden in the latest installment of his ongoing Nightwing run.

Nightwing #83 contains a reference to writer Tom Taylor’s Alfred-centric story in Batman Annual #3 from 2018.

Taylor pointed out the Easter egg on Twitter in celebration of Batman Day. The tweet displayed two comic book pages side-by-side: one from Batman Annual and the other from Nightwing. As Taylor explained, Nightwing #83 featured a visual callback to the closing panel of the “Father’s Day” story found in Batman Annual #3, with the Dark Knight looking at the framed picture of Alfred and his younger self as he thanked Dick Grayson for honoring Alfred’s memory.

The opening storyline of Taylor’s Nightwing set the titular character on a new path, with Dick publicly announcing his intention to use the vast fortune Alfred left him to eliminate poverty in Bludhaven. This philanthropic action separates Dick from his former mentor, who prefers to fight in the shadows.

Nightwing #83 saw Dick seeking advice from Superman, a hero he has more in common with. Their exchange ended with Kal-El calling Dick a good role model and asking him to look out for his teenage son Jon, who recently took up the daunting mantle of Superman from his father. A potential reignited romance with Barbara Gordon is also in the cards for Dick Grayson, with Barbara having demonstrated her affection for him with a kiss.

The next issue of Nightwing, Issue #84, arrives in comic book stores and on digital platforms on Sept. 21. It is written by Tom Taylor, with art by Robbi Rodriguez.
