As Dick Grayson visits the Bat-Family and the Titans, he officially settles two different DC superhero love triangles with a single kiss in Nightwing.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Nightwing #83, on sale now from DC Comics.
Since regaining his memories after his brief stint as Ric Grayson, Nightwing has been adjusting to a world that seems to be radically changing around him. But luckily, he has a couple of people that he can still gravitate towards for support, and it appears some genuine romantic companionship as well.
Nightwing #83, by Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo, Adriano Lucas, and Wes Abbott, seems to confirm that Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon openly have feelings for one another again, with the pair sharing a major kiss right before he reveals the creation of the Alfred Pennyworth Foundation.
Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon have a long history together. Both were foundational parts of the Bat-Family — with Dick serving as the first Robin and Barbara becoming the first Batgirl. Even after they largely left those roles — with Dick going solo to become Nightwing and Barbara embracing her full potential to become Oracle after a brutal Joker attack left her confined to a wheelchair — they have remained major parts of the Bat-Family and within one another’s lives. In fact, over the years the two have also found themselves romantically tied to one another.
Although there have been other major love interests for both of them, Dick and Barbara often find themselves drawn back to one another. Facing the end of the world in Dark Nights: Death Metal, they even quickly got married so they could enjoy their final moments as a couple. But things have been a bit more turbulent recently. Although the two have been close as Nightwing reestablishes himself as a hero in Bludhaven, there’s been a question as to what the full extent of their relationship entails. Just recently, Dick was seemingly drawn back somewhat to his old flame Starfire from the Teen Titans, while Barbara’s feelings for Luke Fox and Jason Bard have been teased and referenced.
But Nightwing #83 seems to close the book on many of those other potential romances, at least for now. After it was revealed to the public that Dick Grayson had been the primary inheritor of Alfred Pennyworth’s estate — meaning he now has a fortune of his own — Dick has made a commitment to helping the people of Bludhaven with his own charitable contributions via the Alfred Pennyworth Foundation. Although he’s initially nervous about the number of people and attention pointed at him, Dick talks out his feelings with Barbara, thanking her for all the advice and friendship she’s offered him over the years.
This prompts Barabra to interrupt him with a kiss — seemingly confirming that Dick and Barabra are officially back together. It’s a big step for both of them and seems to carry on the affirmation of their romance from Dark Nights: Death Metal. It also means that the love triangles they’d been in previously are more or less resolved for now, with any hopes for Dick to resume his romance with Starfire or for Barbara to return to Jason or Luke more or less off the table for now. In the world of superheroes, nothing is truly permanent — so eventually this romance could also end and set up the return of those other options. But as of now, it appears that Nightwing and Oracle have shut down those potential problems with a single meaningful kiss.
