In the preview, the hero heads back home to Gotham to help Batman and his allies face Scarecrow in this year’s crossover event.
A preview for Nightwing #84 sends Dick Grayson back home to Gotham to help the Bat family in this year’s crossover event.
The issue is the first part of a three-issue tie-in story for Nightwing and the hero’s role in the “Fear State” event. The event has been brewing in Batman since Infinite Frontier #0 first introduced Scarecrow and Simon Saint’s nefarious intentions for Gotham City. While Batman has been fighting against Saint’s new Magistrate program and Scarecrow’s schemes to plunge the city into an environment of permanent terror, Nightwing has been busy working to build Blüdhaven into a better city for its citizens.
In the previous issue of Nightwing, Dick met with his friends and allies, including Dr. Leslie Thompkins, Lucius Fox, the Titans and Superman, to discuss how he could help give Blüdhaven a brighter future. Following Alfred Pennyworth’s death, who served as butler and father figure to the Bat family, Dick was left an enormous sum of wealth in Alfred’s will, which he planned to use to give back to the community. The issue left off with Dick announcing to the world that he would be using his new inherited funds to start “The Alfred Pennyworth Foundation,” which would focus on philanthropic efforts across the globe, primarily in Blüdhaven.
It is for this reason that Dick feels guilty in the preview for having to leave the city to help out his other home in Gotham. The last time the hero was in Gotham was during the events of Joker War, which saw Dick regain his memories of who he was after being manipulated by the Joker and Punchline. He reemerged as Nightwing towards the end of the event, even striking a critical blow against the villains by reclaiming Bruce Wayne’s financials and assets from the villains’ accounts.
Of course, Dick not only leaves his adopted city behind him, as he is now the father and pet owner to Haley, a three-legged, pit bull puppy. When Barbara Gordon and Tim Drake are not visiting Dick, he is the sole caregiver to the little pup. The preview and solicitation found below also explains who will be caring for Haley in Dick’s absence, with readers having to hope that the puppy will fare better than a pet goldfish.
