Nintendo’s Japanese Twitter account briefly uploaded a previously unseen clip from the upcoming Metroid Dread which showed recreated elements from the ending of Metroid: Samus Returns.
The clip, now removed, featured recreated scenes from the ending of developer MercurySteam’s previous game in the series, the 2017 3DS remake of the Game Boy’s Metroid II: Return of Samus.
It may have been quickly deleted, but the internet never forgets! @itsa_me_gameboy on Twitter archived the clip — check it out below if you’re okay with potential spoilers:
Somebody has also found the same footage on Nintendo’s Japanese YouTube account set to unlisted (at a much higher quality, obviously). Again, minor spoiler alert if you’re on a Metroid Dread info blackout:
Exactly how this might play into the narrative of Metroid Dread is unclear at the moment. The Google Translate English title of the video above is “Metroid Dread – A Scale of Fear Part 1” and Nintendo has stated that the game will recap the story so far from the four previous mainline entries in the series, so it’s probable that this clip is simply part of an opening montage that somebody sent live a little early.
Indeed, a recent tweet from the same official Nintendo account links to an article exploring the history of the Metroid franchise that brings new players up to speed, so it’s highly likely to be related to the game’s ‘recap’ of the narrative from the previous entries as the company’s promotion teams gear up for the game’s 8th October release.
