The iconic veteran female sky pirate gets a makeover
Studio Ghibli‘s Laputa: Castle in the Sky is commemorating its 35th anniversary with a new figure of Dola, the sky pirate boss. Although she is an older woman in the movie, this new figure reimagines her as an 18-year-old.
In a blink-and-you-miss-it moment, the movie shows a picture of Dola’s younger self hanging in her cabin (when she is rummaging for old clothes to lend the female lead Sheeta). Sheeta ends up wearing the puffy pants that Dola is wearing in the cabin picture and on this figure.
The figure is part of a new lineup of Laputa goods, which includes a figure of Pazu catching Sheeta, a wooden model of the Tiger Moth airship, a Laputa-branded coffee maker, and a diorama of the Laputa castle.
Studio Ghibli‘s adult-targeted design brand GBL will release the figure in Japan in June 2020. Pre-orders will be accepted in Studio Ghibli‘s physical Donguri stores or through the online store until November 7.
