New art for Justice League Incarnate revisits Darkseid’s greatest tragedy, which set him on the path towards being one of DC’s most powerful villains.
Darkseid is one of the most ruthless villains in DC Comics, but new art for Justice League Incarnate revisits how he was set on this path.
In most depictions of the New God, he is a ruthless conqueror in pursuit of the Anti-Life Equation and complete dominion over all. This has been the case in both comics and films like the live-action Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the animated Justice League: War set in the DC Animated Universe, where Darkseid is painted as a stoic force to be reckoned with. However, in art for the upcoming Justice League Incarnate #5 by Andrei Bressan and posted on Twitter by writer Joshua Williamson, Darkseid is shown to be weeping over the loss of his wife, Suli.
The tweet, captioned “Remember who you are,” features art panels calling back to New Gods #8, written by Mark Evanier in 1989 with art by Paris Cullins. In the issue, Darkseid’s history is explored with the revelation that he used to have a kinder heart while married to Suli, who gave birth to their son, Kalibak. However, Darkseid’s mother, Heggra (also seen in the Justice League Incarnate art), asked Desaad — a servant of Darkseid — to remove her son’s “shackles,” so he poisoned Suli. The new art shows the aftermath of her death, which Evanier’s 1989 writing cites as being the catalyst for Darkseid trusting no one and removing any “vulnerabilities from his mind and soul.”
This marks another instance of Justice League Incarnate writers Williamson and Dennis Culver calling back to earlier elements of DC’s long history. In Williamson’s previous miniseries Infinite Frontier, he teased the return of Roy Harper’s daughter, Lian, while the current series has brought back many aspects of stories like The Multiversity by Grant Morrison. In the recent Justice League Incarnate #4, almost every DC crisis and event was listed out chronologically and contextualized as being a result of the Great Darkness.
To stop the Great Darkness, Darkseid allied himself with Justice League Incarnate, though he does not consider himself to be a hero and claims to be “Evil’s God.” Despite the new art showing a more sympathetic side to Darkseid, in the last year alone, he has murdered the Quintessence and laid waste to worlds and their heroes in pursuit of his current mission. His most recent casualty was Flashpoint Batman, though the character will be returning in Flashpoint Beyond in April 2022.
The final issue of Justice League Incarnate #5 is written by Williamson and Culver, with interior and variant cover art by Bressan, main cover art by Gary Frank and a variant cover by Jorge Fornés. Williamson’s tweet teases that the finale will lead directly into Justice League #75, which is titled “Death of the Justice League” and will kill off nine major DC heroes. Justice League Incarnate #5 goes on sale March 1 from DC Comics.
