In Robin & Batman by Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen, Dick Grayson wears distinctly darker duds than his eventual red and green sidekick costume.
Robin & Batman #1 shows how Dick Grayson, Batman’s first sidekick, had a training wardrobe before he donned the red, yellow and green in Robin & Batman #1.
Written by Jeff Lemire and drawn by Dustin Nguyen, the Eisner Award-winning creative team behind Ascender and Descender, Robin & Batman follows Grayson as he grows into his new life as a superhero vigilante. In the wake of his parents’ murder, Dick gets adopted by Bruce Wayne and becomes the DC Universe’s premiere sidekick, Robin. However, this new book reveals that long before he wore one of DC’s most infamous outfits, the Boy Wonder wore a stealthy ensemble more in line with the Dark Knight himself.
A preview for the series juxtaposes Dick preparing for a night of crime-fighting with him preparing for an aerial act with his parents before their passing. The first Robin describes all of the fantastical elements of his new life before the harsh reality of his situation comes into focus, as Dick swiftly kicks a large criminal in the midst of a heist. Alone in the dark streets of Gotham City, Dick follows instructions from Batman delivered via an earpiece, with the caped crusader feeling the need to intervene before his sidekick possibly gets injured.
The release of Robin & Batman coincides with what DC Comics is calling the “Month of Robin.” Outside of this series, DC is celebrating Batman’s caped companions through the print release of Robins. Written by Tim Seeley and drawn by Baldemar Rivas, the book was selected through the inaugural Round Robin competition, where fans could pick from a slew of potential series ideas to vote on, with only one being published in the end. The six-issue miniseries teams up all the former and current Robin–Dick, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, Stephanie Brown and Damian Wayne–as they put their heads together to decipher the mysterious identity of Batman’s long-lost sidekick.
While Robin & Batman depicts some of the earliest adventures of the original Dynamic Duo, the pair are also set to team up in the modern era in the pages of Detective Comics 2021 Annual #1, out later in November. The issue will be written by Mariko Tamaki and Matthew Rosenberg and drawn by David Lapham. The book deals with a new Arkham Tower being built in Gotham City as a replacement for the destroyed Arkham Asylum, but Batman and Nightwing don’t agree on whether or not it should be erected. The annual is the catalyst for the 12-part storyline Shadows of the Bat, which will see the Bat Family fight to save Gotham City from itself, while the Dark Knight leaves for an adventure with Batman Inc.
