Too Kyo Games’ new anime series gives baseball a rather ridiculous twist, and it may just be the idiotic brilliance people need at the moment.
The sci-fi sports anime Tribe Nine is now streaming on Funimation as part of the Winter 2022 anime lineup. Too Kyo Games’ inventive take on baseball evoked mixed reactions from viewers. The anime takes the liberty of altering the rules of baseball, adding extreme elements to a ridiculous extent. However, it might be the kind of stupid people need right now.
Tribe Nine revolves around Extreme Baseball or XB. Like typical baseball, XB requires two teams consisting of multiple players. The game is played on the streets using futuristic manhole covers as bases, and pretty much everything goes. That’s where the extreme part comes into play. Players have the liberty of employing any equipment, be it weapon-grade wares or wearables that can boost speed and jumping ability, at any point in the match. The only rule is that any form of assault is only allowed when the ball is at the hand of either the attacker or defender.
Extreme Baseball, however, is more than just a sport. With gangs, also knowns as tribes, roaming around Neo Tokyo and getting into all kinds of disputes, the government has decided to pass a law making Extreme Baseball the sole means of resolving any sort of conflict. When the Shinagawa Tribe challenged the Minato Tribe, fans got to see firsthand how intense an XB match can be.
Even though the anime’s main focus is a sport, despite how unsporting the players can be, it stars a deeply passionate tuna fisherman. Taiga’s personality may resemble a typical hot-blooded sports anime protagonist, but his ways are far stranger. He imagines the entire game as catching tuna, complete with vivid imagery of his past experiences. Interestingly, his unorthodox playstyle proved to be effective as he not only managed to hit a fast pitch but also performed a shoulder throw on his hulking opponent.
Tribe Nine‘s premise is without a question one that doesn’t require deep analysis. It banks on the ridiculousness and offers enjoyable, mindless fun. It intentionally bends the rules of baseball to unimaginable lengths, to the point that the players can easily and possibly be killed during the match. Its homicidal tendencies presented as blood-pumping action sequences are surprisingly fun to watch. The randomness makes the anime difficult to predict. Tribe Nine clearly doesn’t take itself seriously, which allows it to insert multiple kooky details like having quadruplets in the team without any drawback.
Its stunning visuals and enthusing action scenes may remind viewers of Sk8:The Infinity, which aired mid-last year. The similarity is rooted in the fact that both anime have a rather extreme and combative take on their main sports themes. While the two anime may have comparable undertones, it doesn’t seem like Tribe Nine is a Sky: The Infinity clone. The two series have two different premises and levels of absurdity.
Tribe Nine is still in its first episodes, but it already leaves a strong impression. The anime clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously and is complemented by silly scenes and shallow jokes. Even though it is still far too early to give any kind of conclusion, Tribe Nine may be one of the best anime this season as long as it maintains the standard of its idiotic brilliance. After all, people’s minds are already preoccupied with countless concerns nowadays, and everyone can use some mindless entertainment.
