The universe depicted in Netflix’s live-action Cowboy Bebop remake expands with a new prequel novel, comic book series, and art book.

Titan Publishing has announced several new tie-in books for Netflix’s upcoming Cowboy Bebop live-action series.

The first of Titan’s Cowboy Bebop books is a prequel novel, which will be released alongside the Netflix show in November. Subtitled A Syndicate Story: Red Planet Requiem, the book will be authored by Sean Cummings, who also served as a staff writer on the new live-action series. The prequel will tell the story of a young Spike Spiegel and his friend and future nemesis, Vicious, as they grow up in the slums of Mars and become involved with its powerful crime syndicates.

Titan will also publish a four-issue comic book series featuring an all new story starring Spike, Jet and Faye. Cowboy Bebop: The Comic Series sees the team of bounty hunters on the trail of a criminal who has a legendary vest that supposedly makes him extremely lucky. The new comic is written by DC veteran Dan Watters (Lucifer, Home Sick Pilots) and features art by Lamar Mathurin. The series will begin its run in December 2021, with a collected trade paperback due out in May 2022.

Finally, Titan will also release an art book detailing the production of Netflix’s live-action remake. Titled Cowboy Bebop: Making The Netflix Series, the book will chronicle the four year journey the series went on, from its initial announcement in 2017 to its streaming debut this year. The book will feature a foreword from series show runner André Nemec, as well as behind the scenes photos and concept art that show how the series translated the look and style of the classic anime to a live-action production. The art book is scheduled to be released sometime during the spring of 2022.

Cowboy Bebop debuted in 1998 and was immediately recognized as one of the best anime of the decade. Directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, who would later go on to direct the equally critically acclaimed Samurai Champloo, and produced by Gundam animation studio Sunrise, the series was lauded for its mature themes, extravagant animation and memorable soundtrack. The series is set in a future where most of humanity has abandoned the Earth and now lives on colonies on Mars and the moons of Jupiter, and tells the story of a team of incredibly capable but down on their luck bounty hunters, who are each weighed down by their past in different ways.

Watanabe served as a creative consultant for Netflix’s remake of his series. The anime’s composer, Yoko Kanno, will also pen the score for the live-action series as well. The American reimagining of the show stars John Cho as Spike Spiegel, Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black, and Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine. The new series will premiere on Netflix on Nov. 19, while the original anime is already available for streaming on the service.
