NCIS: Hawai’i Sees a Navy Recruiter Murdered

The latest episode of NCIS: Hawai’i followed Jane Tennant’s team as the agents investigate the murder of a class-act recruiter.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for NCIS: Hawai’i Season 1, Episode 3, “Recruiter,” which aired Monday October 4th on CBS.

After its first few episodes started the new NCIS spinoff on an explosive high note, “Recruiter” settled NCIS: Hawai’i into a rhythm as the show’s best episode yet. It’s starting to look like the series will be able to maintain a steady following as its characters are looking more natural in their respective roles, which automatically makes them more relatable. This week’s episode followed Jane Tennant’s team as her agents investigate the murder of a Navy recruiter, and confirmed the saying that no good deed goes unpunished.

The opening showed Petty Officer First Class Miles Hayward giving a recruit a pep-talk as he ran the steps in an abandoned stadium. Shortly after, as Hayward was leaving, a masked assailant shot him three times in his car. When Tennant arrived to investigate the next morning, her team quickly figured out that the murder was no robbery gone wrong, it was a hit.

The initial investigation didn’t show any red flags for Hayward. Before he died, he was all over the island helping people, volunteering at homeless shelters and giving wayward kids a new path in the navy. He seemed like the perfect person, until Jesse and Lucy found a gun hidden at his apartment that was connected to a recent shooting — one with ties to a local gang called the Oania Boys. On top of that, Hayward had organ damage that was associated with being beaten with a soft object. So, Jesse and Kai go undercover to get some intel on the gang, and they discover that a teenager named Brad – who Hayward was recruiting — seemed to be involved in the murder.

From there, it turned into a big mess. Brad was taken in and interrogated, but his mother pulled him out. Then, another one of the Oania Boys confessed, but things seemed a little fishy. After more investigating, the team found out that the gang member who tried to confess was actually Brad’s secret father trying to take the fall for him.

Later, Kai found Brad and got him to talk. It turned out that he really did want to get into the Navy, and had lied about his involvement with the gang on his application. Because of that, the Navy had rejected him, but Hayward was trying to get a waiver for him to join anyway. Hayward was actually hiding the gun to keep Brad out of trouble, because a different gang member had told him to get rid of it.

Naturally, the agents thought that this other gang member was responsible for Hayward’s murder, so they went and arrested him. However, they were wrong. It was actually Brad’s mother who killed Hayward, simply because he was going to help the boy get out of the gang and off of the island. It seemed odd, but the mother couldn’t stand the thought of her son leaving. So, she had resolved to keep her son there by killing the recruiter and crushing her son’s dreams.

At the very end of the episode, Brad and Hayward’s other recruits all took the oath of enlistment as Kai gave them all a speech about the value of what they were doing and how much Hayward had believed in them. For Hayward, it was “No good deed,” but his work still helped a lot of kids find a new path.
