Indie developer Alkemi has put its cards on the table to announce a brand new tabletop game for the Switch – Foretales. And it looks and sounds just lovely.
Published by Dear Villagers, who have called it “among the most ambitious indies we’ve come across”, the game prides itself on its beautiful Disney-inspired card art. Every card features different anthropomorphic animals, from archer bunnies to armour-donning crocodiles.
We’ve shuffled the deck and want to lay out some of the best-looking shots we’ve seen from Foretales, so why not take a look:
With your deck in hand and a seat by the fire, you’ll be serenaded by music from Christophe Héral – the composer behind the wonderful music of Beyond Good & Evil, Rayman Origins, and Rayman Legends – with narration coming from the legendary Travis Willingham, our current Knuckles the Echidna!
That all sounds pretty cosy, doesn’t it? Well, the game isn’t always going to be. Its ambitious narrative structure means there are so many different paths to unlock. Don’t just take it from us – here’s the PR which gives you a little hint at the sinister goings-on in this world:
Foretales tells the story of a collapsing world doomed by a dark prophecy. Assuming the role of the avian small-time thief Volepain, you must assemble your party by choosing from a selection of anthropomorphic characters ranging from the tiger archer Léo, to the gorilla Karst, to the elephant Isabeau, and parrot Pattenbois. Use each character’s unique skills along with consumable cards to forge your path through a huge variety of scripted encounters and situations. Choose whether to approach a scenario by using stealth, creating a ruse, making a trade, or engaging in good old-fashioned fisticuffs.
Play through the story multiple times to unlock all narrative branches, find multiple solutions to a single problem and maybe discover a way to achieve what seemed impossible at first. Experiment with different card associations and write your own story with your own moral values.
Alkemi is still preparing the deck, but we’ll be able to pick up Foretales when it releases on Switch this summer. That’s the perfect camping game, then, isn’t it?
