From the beginning of My Hero Academia, Deku and Bakugo had an unusual relationship. Even though they didn’t get along, they still ended up together in the same school because their goals took them in the same direction. Both of them wanted to be Pro Heroes and were passionate about competing against each other.
Despite their opposite personalities, Deku and Bakugo’s relationship began to grow into a friendship. As a result, Deku had a lot of time to watch Bakugo from the beginning of the school year, and he learned from him through their relationship.
10 He learned to fight without a Quirk
During Deku’s first fight with Bakugo at U.A., he knew that his control over his Quirk, One For All, was weak. As a result, he decided to reserve his Quirk for the final part of the battle. So he was forced to outsmart Bakugo and used his knowledge to defeat Bakugo’s explosive Quirk.
Deku used the fact that Bakugo habitually used his right arm. To defeat Bakugo, he rushed in and grabbed Bakugo’s arm. Unfortunately, the tactic didn’t defeat Bakugo. But it did buy Ochaco time to find the fake weapon which Iida was watching.
9 He learned to be assertive
At the beginning of the series, Deku wasn’t self-assertive like his hero, All Might. In fact, he tended to get nervous when Bakugo started yelling at him. But, as Deku and Bakugo continued the Hero Course for U.A., Deku learned to be more assertive, especially when it comes to Bakugo.
Even though he could get anxious, Deku was still capable of being confident when necessary. This change was evident when he ran up to Bakugo and Todoroki and told them how to escape with his help.
8 He learned that he shouldn’t tell secrets
After gaining All Might’s Quirk, Deku used it in a battle against Bakugo and Iida. After this battle, he noticed that Bakugo was frustrated about Deku’s powers, which he believed Deku hid. In an attempt to appease Bakugo, Deku told Bakugo that the Quirk wasn’t genetic.
In other words, he revealed All Might and his secret. Once Bakugo finally realizes that Deku gained All Might’s Quirk, he scolded Deku for telling him. Then Bakugo informed them that he would keep the secret.
7 He learned how to fight like Bakugo
While rescuing Iida from Stain the Hero Killer, Deku used the new fighting technique that he was creating. During this battle, Deku had to stay away from Stain’s sword and knives. To avoid them, he got behind Stain. Then he jumped into the air to attack from above the villain. As Iida watched these moves, he compared Bakugo’s fighting style to Midoriya’s.
This connection wasn’t surprising because Deku habitually watched different fighting styles, including Bakugo’s. As a result, his fighting style showed similarities to Bakugo’s style.
6 He learned how to deal with stubborn people
Before they entered U.A., Bakugo and Deku knew each other. However, their relationship didn’t seem like a real friendship. During childhood, Deku was genuinely interested in Bakugo, while Bakugo disliked Deku. Deku was able to help Bakugo when his leg got hurt by a piece of rubble.
Even though Bakugo insisted that he would walk himself, Deku appealed to Bakugo’s idea of owing someone for help. As a result, he convinced Bakugo that Deku owed him, and he could repay it by helping Bakugo walk.
5 He learned that trying to win is important
Deku had always aspired to become a hero, and he joined U.A. to aid people. However, whereas Deku was driven by the idea of a hero, Bakugo was driven by the desire of becoming the unbeatable hero. As a result, Bakugo thought of heroes as winners. So he tried to win battles based on his power.
After Bakugo and Deku got into a fight, All Might reminded them that they should mix these two ideas. In other words, Deku should also want to become an unbeatable hero.
4 He learned how to forgive
During their childhood, there were times when Bakugo would either yell at or hurt Deku. However, once Deku entered U.A. and gained a Quirk, he didn’t hold the past problems against Bakugo. Instead, when Bakugo got upset about Deku’s Quirk, Deku tried to explain the truth about it to make Bakugo feel better.
However, Bakugo didn’t seem to believe what Deku said. But, even though Bakugo continued to yell at him, Deku still tried to become a real friend to Bakugo, especially when he needed one.
3 He learned that people can hide their guilt
After Deku and some of his classmates helped Bakugo escape the League of Villains, he didn’t understand how the kidnapping influenced Bakugo. But he realized this problem when Bakugo challenged him to a fight. When the confrontation escalated, Deku slowly recognized Bakugo’s guilt and his anger over Deku’s strength.
He also realized that Bakugo needed this confrontation to vent his rage. So he decided to fight Bakugo. By letting Bakugo vent his anger, Deku became more aware of Bakugo’s guilt about being kidnapped and his perception of Deku.
2 He learned that he could fight All Might
Even though Deku got his powers from All Might, he still had a hard time believing that he could defeat All Might. In Hero Class, Bakugo and Deku had to fight or escape All Might. Deku fearfully insisted on escaping. But Bakugo forced Deku to confront All Might by attacking the teacher himself.
In this battle, both Bakugo and Deku were unable to defeat All Might. But, when Bakugo finally helped Deku escape, Deku decides to go against All Might so that he can help Bakugo escape with him.
1 He learned how to rescue a stubborn person
When Bakugo got kidnapped by the League of Villains, Deku and several of his classmates set out to try and help him. So they found the warehouse where All Might and All For One ended up fighting while Bakugo fought the League. Deku knew that he couldn’t help Bakugo by fighting or by talking to him. However, he knew that Bakugo and Kirishima have a better relationship than he and Bakugo.
Deku used that relationship to convince Bakugo to let them save him. He did this by having Kirishima convince Bakugo to go with their rescue plan.
