My Hero Academia: 10 Basic Mistakes Deku Keeps Making

[ad_1]

In the world of My Hero Academia, Heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds, and series protagonist Izuku “Deku” Midoriya is no exception. Deku starts out Quirkless and sad, but he gets the chance of a lifetime when he meets the number one Pro Hero All Might, and starts down the path of becoming the hero he’s always wanted to be.

Since the story is told from a much older Deku’s point of view, fans know that Deku’s zero to hero journey pays off big in the end, but there’s still a lot he’s got to learn, particularly when it comes to a number of mistakes he keeps making.

10 He Suffers From Stage Fright

Stage fright is a very common and perfectly natural fear, but considering that Pro Heroes in the My Hero Academia world are also celebrities who are often interviewed, it’s a hurdle that aspiring Heroes need to to overcome. Deku’s still very much afflicted with stage fright when put on the spot.

Being the only up-and-coming Hero in Class 1-A to freeze up during the mock interviews with Mt. Lady, it seems Deku has a lot of growing to do when all eyes are on him. It’s a fear that he can definitely get over with time.

9 He’s Got Something Of A Socially Awkward Streak

It’s not clear if Deku had a lot of friends back before enrolling U.A., but he was definitely picked on for being Quirkless. Considering that background, it can’t be helped that Deku wound up with more than a little social anxiety. To be fair, Deku has come out of his shell a lot since coming to U.A., but there are still times where he winds up being socially awkward.

It’s clear that Deku sometimes has trouble talking to people, especially girls, and just speaking up in general. Despite this, Deku’s able to say what matters when he needs to, so he should be able to relax a bit when talking to others, too.

8 His Longstanding Envy Of Bakugo

As a kid, Deku looked up to Katsuki Bakugo, who was blessed with a strong Quirk. Because of this, Bakugo became Deku’s ideal image of what a real go-getter looks like. Since getting his own Quirk, though, Deku still carries some of that longstanding envy around with him, despite his own strength now.

Bakugo was the one who relentlessly bullied Deku, yet Deku looks up to him anyway and still envies and respects the guy to boot. In a way, it’s because of how he compares himself to Bakugo that he can’t recognize his own efforts at times.

7 Being A Little Too In the Zone When It Comes To Quirks

Before getting his Quirk, Deku spent a lot of his time researching and cataloging Heroes and their Quirks in his notebook, and sometimes he’d get a little too in the zone, muttering all his observations out loud while doing so. Surprisingly, despite getting a Quirk and being accepted into U.A., this little habit of Deku’s still lives on.

It’s not a bad thing to document observations about the Quirks of heroes, villains, and his fellow classmates, but it does tend to creep people out a little as he gets lost in thought. If nothing else, Deku could at least learn to curb mumbling his thoughts aloud.

6 He Lets His Emotions Get The Best Of Him

Between the two, Deku is definitely more level-headed than Bakugo. There’s not much comparison there, but much like Bakugo, Deku does at times let his emotions get the better of him.

This often causes him to act on impulse and jump headfirst into danger without thinking, which can be a strength and a weakness at the same time. This can also extend to fighting carelessly where he loses himself to these feelings in combat, succumbing to intense rage, again not too much unlike his friend Bakugo.

5 Putting All Might On A Pedestal

Being an inspiration and the number one Pro Hero for many years, it’s easy to see why so many would adore All Might. Deku looked up to All Might from a really early age, becoming something of a super fan of the Symbol of Peace. However, at times, Deku can idolize All Might a little too much.

There’s nothing exactly wrong with this; after all, All Might was the number one Hero for a reason and Deku does owe him a lot, but at times he forgets that All Might is human too and has made his share of mistakes.

4 He Inspires His Opponents — And Not Always In A Good Way

Like a number of good protagonists, Deku’s words and actions have an effect on the people around him, even some of his rivals or opponents. In many cases, Deku’s influence has had a positive effect, but this doesn’t always pan out well for him.

While he did motivate Todoroki to use his left side, making full use of the fire half of his Quirk, this encouragement was what ultimately led to Deku himself being defeated during the U.A. Sports Festival. Even worse, his small talk with Shigaraki in the Kiyashi Ward Shopping Mall helped the villain further down his path by inspiring an epiphany about Stain’s conviction and its ties to All Might.

3 He Can Be Reckless With His Own Safety

Deku’s very intelligent and analytical, but there are a lot of times where that doesn’t reflect in his fighting style. Deku will rush in without much of a plan if push comes to shove, and the last thing on his mind is his own self-preservation while he takes damage from his opponents or even his own Quirk.

Deku’s tendency to forgo his own personal safety to save or protect others very admirable, but it’s also reckless and shortsighted considering the horrible damage it has on his body and how it may hinder him in the future. It was this kind of mistake that made him unable to save Bakugo during the Forest Training Camp arc.

2 He Still Has Low Self-Esteem

After being bullied and looked down on for the circumstances of his birth, it’s no wonder that Deku developed very low self-esteem. Despite meeting his hero, becoming that hero’s successor, and the many accomplishments he’s earned since then, Deku still carries around feelings of low confidence and inadequacy.

In a way, that low sense of self-worth has helped him to strive to rise above what he thinks he’s capable of, but Deku should be able to recognize his own strengths, too, both physically and emotionally. At least it doesn’t stop him from going beyond his best.

1 He’s Underestimating His Quirk As It Grows And Changes

From the start, Deku has underestimated the sheer power he’s been granted by adopting the Quirk One For All. His Quirk, still evolving, can often be too much for his body when used at maximum strength, inflicting some pretty brutal injuries on him. While Deku has found ways to control it to some extent, he’ll sometimes go all out without thinking about what it could do to him.

This extends to the new powers hidden inside One For All. Deku keeps underestimating the way in which One For All is evolving, and these new powers can take him by surprise and deal more damage than he intends. He has the potential to master his Quirk, but it’s clear it’ll take a lot of time and practice.
