M:TG Reveals New Cards for Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty

Wizards of the Coast reveals more information on Magic: The Gathering’s upcoming Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty expansion, unveiling new cards and mechanics.

Wizards of the Coast further parted the curtain on Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, the latest expansion for the popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering.

While players may be excited to return to Kamigawa, the plane will look significantly different from the last expansion block based on the location. Back in 2004, the setting drew heavily from ancient Japanese mythology and culture, a theme which Neon Dynasty unites with a modern, cyberpunk aesthetic to create a style that’s both traditional and new. The citizens of Kamigawa have blended several cultures and philosophies following the conclusion of a terrible war that ravaged the planet. The main narrative of the expansion follows Kaito Shizuki, a new planeswalker, as he searches for Kamigawa’s missing emperor with the help of a mysterious organization known as The Futurists.

When not engaging with the story, players can look forward to a host of new mechanics that should result in some compelling new decks and strategies. While previous Magic: The Gathering expansions have previously focused on introducing either artifacts or enchantments, Neon Dynasty is focusing on both. Speaking to this design choice, Dave Humphreys, the set’s lead game designer, said, “Tradition is most represented from an enchantment side of things, and modernity is represented from an artifacts side of things. We do have traditional equipment that we still want to show up and have in this world, but there’s a spectrum that goes along with color pie — from green to white, to black, to red, to blue — from the more traditional to the more techy.”

Neon Dynasty will see the return of several mechanics, including the fan-favorite “Ninjutsu” keyword which Humphrey’s notes as being one of the most popular abilities from the original Kamigawa set. Ninjutsu allows players to swap an unblocked card already on the battlefield with a card bearing the keyword in their hand, instantly tapping and attacking with it. “Channel” also makes a triumphant return and simply allows players to discard a card in order to gain a special effect.

As for brand new keywords, players can look forward to “Reconfigure,” a mechanic that allows certain cards to “attach” to creatures already in play. These cards function similar to equipment, granting creatures unique bonuses and buffs; the core difference is that these cards can also be removed by paying a small amount of mana. When unattached, “Reconfigure” cards can function like regular creatures, both attacking and blocking.

Neon Dynasty will be available in Magic: The Gathering Arena on Feb. 10 while the physical version of the expansion can be picked up from Feb. 18. Plenty of new cards will be revealed in the build-up to release, so fans ought to keep their eyes peeled!
