Whether he’s fighting Wolverine or with the Thunderbolts, the telepathic villaiMister X is one of the most dangerous fighters in the Marvel Universe,

In the Marvel Universe, Wolverine famously calls himself “the best there is” at what he does. However, one of Wolverine’s deadliest and most sadistic enemies, Mister X, likes to claim that title too, and this master martial artist has a body count to back that up. He’s obsessed with the rush of killing, which sent him on a quest to become the greatest fighter on Earth.

While he might not have achieved that goal, he is without a doubt one of the most dangerous fighters in the Marvel Universe, being able to give the likes of Wolverine a run for his money. And even though most of his prowess comes from physical capabilities, it makes him one of the deadliest villains to ever join the Thunderbolts, who he managed to outsmart and before abandoning.

Mister X was first introduced in Wolverine #159 by Frank Tieri and Sean Chen. His true name is unknown, because he went through great lengths to eliminate his origins from public record. However, it is known that Mister X came from an extremely wealthy family. From a young age, X developed a psychological addiction to killing that began when he witnessed a woman die after being struck by a car. This activated his dormant mutant power of low-level telepathy, but it was just strong enough that he could feel her die.

The high of feeling someone slip away became all X wanted, and he spent the next several years committing hundreds of murders to recreate that rush. Among his victims were his own family, whose fortune he used to erase his identity and then fund his campaign to learn from the best martial artists on the planet.

X’s dedication to his craft turned him into one of the deadliest fighters on the planet, having learned from and then killed some of the best teachers from around the world. His telepathic powers weren’t as strong as those of Jean Grey or Emma Frost, but his telepathy was strong enough to let him predict what moves his opponent would use next in a fight. This meant that X would never be caught off-guard by skilled opponents.

His skills made him a valuable target for the Thunderbolts, who were sent into Madripoor to assassinate him during an opera in 2009’s Thunderbolts #132, by Andy Diggle and Roberto de la Torre. But X managed to evade their attempts until it was revealed that the entire operation was a sham. Norman Osborn had sent the Thunderbolts to test X and, having proved himself worthy, offered him a position on the Thunderbolts. Seeking greater challenges and knowing Norman’s ambitious nature, X agreed to join. But this displayed X’s level of skill before he ever joined the team, being able to outmaneuver multiple powered individuals, some of whom were arguably more powerful than X, if not as deadly.

X stayed with the team for a time, but quickly grew frustrated with the lax periods in between missions. He got so bored that he teleported to a South African country to take on guerrilla fighters all by himself out of sheer boredom. But he would eventually get the fight he was craving during the “Siege” storyline when the Thunderbolts invaded Asgard. X got to show off his skills, even managing to kill a few Asgardians. When the tide turned against the Thunderbolts though, X managed to escape before being captured.

X’s time on the Thunderbolts was short-lived, but it proved that he is one of the most capable fighters on the planet. He was able to outwit and outfight beings who should have been able to crush him easily, In any combat situation, X uses every skill to his absolute advantage, and he’s consistently training and developing the new skills that he needs to win. Even Wolverine admitted that X’s skills in combat are flawless, which is high praise from the only other Marvel character who claims to be “the best there is.”
