Moonfall continued Roland Emmerich’s penchant for disaster movies, once again taking the Independence Day director into space. This movie focused on NASA astronauts, Jocinda aka Jo (Halle Berry) and Harper (Patrick Wilson), as they worked with a conspiracy theorist, KC (John Bradley), to stop the moon from crashing into Earth.
They unearthed evidence that revealed a malevolent entity in the form of a nanotech swarm was shifting the moon out of its orbit, causing tidal waves and earthquakes and starting the destruction of the planet as the Roche Limit was breached. With that in mind, let’s dive into who exactly this sinister villain was and the dark secret the moon held regarding the human race.
What Was the Nanotech Wave in Moonfall?
This wave was known as the “swarm,” which tore through Harper and Jo’s space shuttle in 2011, killing a teammate. Unfortunately, NASA covered it up, not knowing how to deal with what they perceived to be aliens. 11 years later, the trio of heroes took the shuttle, the Endeavor, back to the moon, but this time, they cut all power and relied on pneumatic and analog travel.
The swarm could detect bio-organisms and electric devices, so all tech had to be killed, with the ship flaring in order to get to the moon. And KC’s theory was right, in that the moon was a megastructure with a hollow core, allowing them to jump in a lander and dive in. They ended up in a control room, which locked the swarm out, while Harper met an artificial intelligence.
This “operating system” confirmed the wave was a series of A.I.s humanity’s ancestors built in distant galaxies eons ago. They colonized various planets, but the machines eventually rebelled and formed the swarm. This new serpent-like unit didn’t want to be subservient to the human race anymore, so it devoured all the planets and went to war across the cosmos to take the colonies out.
Why Did the Swarm Attack the Moon in Moonfall?
The operator confirmed Earth’s moon was but one of many megastructures humanity’s ancestors build and seeded out amid the intergalactic conflict. The plan was for these moons to travel across the cosmos, creating planets in a series of Big Bangs before using tech to seed DNA out to usher in a new era of mankind. Unfortunately, the swarm attacked the development site, and only one moon survived. This giant orb escaped the firefight and then incubated what would become Earth. In other words, the moon was basically mankind’s creator and its guardian as it sustained life. However, in 2011, the swarm found the satellite and began trying to breach its core, which led to the attack on the Endeavor.
Since then, the swarm’s attacks shifted the radial orbit, chipped away at the moon and altered its mass. The wave knew this would alter gravity, change the nature of Earth and its physics and render the atmosphere depleted with oxygen. Ultimately, the wave was killing two stones by crashing the moon into the planet, thus fulfilling the A.I.’s purpose of removing the possibility of overlords for good.
