As Moon Knight takes a new approach to his superhero mission, his nocturnal alliances may lead to a collision course with a major hero.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Moon Knight #2, on sale now from Marvel.
Since resurfacing, Moon Knight has taken on a new role in New York City, apparently no longer in service of Khonshu after siding against the Ancient Egyptian God of Vengeance when the deity attempted to reshape the Marvel Universe in his image. Instead, Moon Knight now quietly runs his own practice, claiming to be something of a priest and a patron saint for all things that go bump in the night, blending his street-level heroics with the supernatural as defender of werewolves, vampires and other things lurking in the shadows. And this new mission may put Moon Knight squarely on a collision course with the Marvel Universe’s resident vampire hunter Blade.
Since Khonshu was imprisoned by Moon Knight and the Avengers, Marc Spector’s new base of operations is the Midnight Mission, a private practice as a sort of hero-for-hire operating out of a small office in New York. While Moon Knight has certainly battled vampires before, he is not generally regarded as a threat to the undead, supported by his usual, nocturnal modus operandi and theme. Moon Knight goes one step further towards working with the vampire community, hiring on a new assistant named Reese to help him sort through the needs of the monstrous underground, with Reese recently transformed into a vampire herself and struggling with her fledging bloodlust as revealed in Moon Knight #2 by Jed MacKay, Alessandro Cappuccio, Rachelle Rosenberg and VC’s Cory Petit.
While this budding partnership may seem innocent enough, Blade has always had zero tolerance for vampiric activity, befitting his reputation, and recently gained a new position that may put Reese on his radar. With things turning increasingly desperate during the crossover event King in Black, the Avengers made a deal with Dracula for the warlord to employ his armies of vampires to defend against the invading symbiotes. Following the symbiotes’ defeat, Dracula successfully was granted amnesty for his past actions and given a United Nations-recognized sovereign state in Eastern Europe but, in exchange, Blade was tasked by the UN to diligently patrol for vampiric activity that violated guidelines the UN had subsequently imposed on the new nation-state.
And while Moon Knight’s new mission may be a change-up from the usual gritty, back alley fights against low-level criminals that he is often associated with, Marc Spector certainly has a history with the Marvel Universe’s monster community. Moon Knight made his debut with Werewolf by Night and has worked with the lycanthrope on multiple occasions since while also balancing partnerships with other supernatural figures, including Son of Satan and Ghost Rider. And with a vampire now in his employ outside of Dracula’s vampire nation, Blade may make a return trip to New York to question Moon Knight about his new assistant and the increase in vampire activity in the Big Apple.
While Moon Knight may have made amends with the Avengers after attacking the magical members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in service of Khonshu, before severing ties with his godly benefactor, things could be as tense as ever between Moon Knight and Blade. With Marc knowingly employing a vampire to help him carry out his superhero business, this may reignite hostilities between Moon Knight and Blade, with Reese’s undead life hanging in the balance. And while Moon Knight has enjoyed a recent power boost, he won’t have Khonshu’s blessing behind him this time to give him an edge over the Daywalker should a rematch erupt in the streets of New York.
