Moon Knight Director Reveals the MCU Series’ Horror Influences

[ad_1]

Aaron Moorhead’s past as a horror film director has a direct influence on his projects today, including the upcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight.

Aaron Moorhead, one-half of the directing duo that worked on episodes of Moon Knight, shared how the previous horror films he’s worked on have impacted the upcoming Disney+ series.

Moorhead discussed how his and co-director Justin Benson’s earlier work on horror films has affected the type of work they’ve been offered while speaking with The Playlist, noting that all of their projects tend to have a darker tone. “The phone also isn’t ringing to go do Two And A Half Men,” he said with a laugh. “It’s stuff that’s kind of like what we already do. Archive 81 definitely shares DNA with [our previous films] The Endless and Resolution. You’ll see the same with Moon Knight.”

The films Moorhead referenced were a pair of horror films that exist within the same cinematic universe and feature videos that lead their protagonists down ominous paths. Released in 2012, Resolution follows a graphic designer who travels to a remote cabin to save his drug-addicted friend after receiving an email containing a disturbing video. The Endless, which also stars Moorhead and Benson, chronicles two brothers who are drawn back into the cult they escaped as children after they receive a VHS tape in the mail.

The third project mentioned by Moorhead was Netflix’s Archive 81, a time-traveling and reality-bending series that’s based on a podcast of the same name and also features both a cult and videotapes. Moorhead and Benson directed two episodes of the series, which was inspired by the story of a filmmaker who became enmeshed with a mysterious company after being hired to restore a set of tapes documenting a New York City apartment building that burnt to the ground, killing everyone inside.

With the trailer for Moon Knight already giving hints of the dissociative identity disorder that Steven Grant/Marc Spector (Issac) will grapple with on the show, it’s clear that Moorhead’s and Benson’s knack for fractured timelines and spooky undertakings are a good fit.

It’s also been confirmed that Ethan Hawke will play cult leader Arthur Harrow in the series and that Spector has some type of connection to the ancient Egyptian god Khonshu, as previously established in the comics, which further suggests the new Marvel series will fit within the shadowy wheelhouse of Moorhead and Benson.

While Moon Knight isn’t set to premiere for a couple of months, the trailer for Moon Knight recently set the record for the most-viewed first trailer for a Marvel Studios/Disney+ series by garnering more than one million likes on YouTube since being posted on Jan. 17. In doing so, the trailer surpassed the 915 million likes that accumulated on the first official trailer for Hawkeye and the 760 thousand likes posted on the trailer for WandaVision.

Moon Knight is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on March 30.
