Good morning, gamers and Planeswalkers everywhere! My name’s Emma Handy, one of Play Design’s newest additions. The previous owner of our regular Magic Online cube changes has passed the mantle onto me, and I couldn’t be more excited to grow into this position. Which cube is on-deck? Modern Cube!
After nearly a year away, there are tons of new goodies to add to the card list, like multiformat all-stars Skyclave Apparition and Bloodchief’s Thirst as well as cards from the newest kid on the block: Modern Horizons 2. With all kinds of fresh goodies and new-to-Modern reprints, the card pool is deeper than ever before, and this is as good a time as any to showcase some of the changes coming with this iteration of Modern Cube!
The loudest trend in philosophical shifts in this version of Modern Cube is a de-emphasis of some of the combos that were present before. A lot of the cards that are being cut this time are cards that didn’t really do a ton outside of their respective combos but took up a decent amount of real estate across the cube. Heliod, Sun-Crowned; Saheeli Rai; and Inverter of Truth were the biggest offenders here, and with Modern’s interaction being a bit weaker than Legacy Cube or Vintage Cube, it could be difficult for non-aggro decks to meaningfully interact with these wins from hand.
Having cards with a range restricted largely to “blank cardboard” and “win the game” isn’t always the most exciting gameplay, and this change is one that I like to think is indicative of what I value in cube curation: gameplay. As development of these cubes takes place over time, I’m going to be keeping a close eye on which cards people like playing, which cards they don’t, and which ones are making it fun to play Magic.
Some cards are fun to look at in a pack or on a cube list, but people often spend more time playing the games than they do drafting any given cube. This means that if a card isn’t making it into decks, it’s less likely to make it from one cube update to the next.
That isn’t to say that all the combos in future cubes are dead on arrival. Pestermite and Kiki-Jiki are still in the cube after all, with Imperial Recruiter being added to support, thanks to Modern Horizons 2! The difference here is in these cards being playable on their own (even if Pestermite is a bit weak on rate) and rarely being complete blanks in the same way that some other combo pieces can be.
Ultimately, we want people to have as much fun as possible, and if a change looks a bit off, it’s to try and find cards that people are the most excited to put in their decks and ideally win games with.
