Mission: Impossible Director Teases Henry Cavill’s Return

Director Christopher McQuarrie teases the return of Henry Cavill’s traitorous August Walker in a future Mission: Impossible film.

Although audiences may think they’ve seen the last of Henry Cavill’s traitorous August Walker, Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie recently teased the fist-cocking villain’s potential return.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, McQuarrie hinted at a potential return for Cavill’s character in a future Mission: Impossible film. While August Walker won’t be appearing in next year’s Mission: Impossible 7, McQuarrie isn’t ruling out the villain’s appearance in the action series’ eighth entry. “I’m in the process of rewriting [Mission: Impossible 8] right now,” the director said. “This afternoon I could turn a page and any actor from the past could come back. There is no such thing as death in movies, only unavailability.”

McQuarrie noted during the interview that disgruntled fans on social media have not let him forget their displeasure at his decision to kill off Walker in Mission: Impossible – Fallout. But, with Cavill bringing his subtle wit and dry sense of humor to the character, McQuarrie isn’t surprised Walker became a fan favorite. “The end result was that you had a ‘bad guy’ in the movie who never lost that leading man appeal,” McQuarrie said.

Making his first appearance in the franchise’s sixth and most recent installment, August Walker is a high-ranking CIA agent and top-level assassin. Walker is initially tasked with keeping an eye on Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), with clearance to eliminate Ethan if the operative gets out of line. Yet, it isn’t until later in the film when Walker is revealed to be John Lark, one of the leaders of The Apostles who Ethan had been tracking in order to prevent the group’s attempt at a new world order.

Since Fallout‘s release in 2018, McQuarrie has been considering bringing both Cavill and Alec Baldwin back to reprise their roles, as the director signed a deal with Paramount to write and direct both Mission: Impossible 7 and 8. Though McQuarrie mentioned using flashbacks during a 2019 interview, his more recent comments about there being “no such thing as death in movies” seem to suggest Cavill’s Walker and Baldwin’s IMF secretary Alan Hunley could in fact return in the flesh.

Details on Mission: Impossible 7 remain scarce at the moment, with a teaser image shared by McQuarrie earlier this year being one of the few pieces of official promotional materials for the film released so far. Despite being originally announced to release this past summer, shutdowns due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic caused the film to receive multiple delays. The production stoppages even caused Paramount to file a lawsuit against its insurer in a dispute over a $100 million insurance policy.

Mission: Impossible 7 is currently scheduled to release in theaters Sept. 30, 2022, while Mission: Impossible 8 is expected to arrive July 7, 2023.
