Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S’s Biggest Unanswered Questions

[ad_1]

In between heartwarming and cataclysmic moments, the feel-good Dragon Maid S left viewers guessing on topics ranging from mysterious to hilarious.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the entirety of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S, now streaming on Crunchyroll.

When it comes to scaly shapeshifters on heartfelt misadventures, few anime deliver quite like Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. Summer 2021 saw the long-awaited series return with its second season, titled Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S. While the show kept the same generally episodic nature, S also added more plot-focused elements to the high-powered antics of Tohru and friends. Throughout its run, the writing continued to tantalize viewers, teasing information about the dragons’ world and making callbacks to earlier events. Now that the second season has wrapped up, here are a few of the series’ most beguiling questions still in need of answers.

What Is The Emperor of Demise’s Relationship To The Human World?

Shouta's Father and the Emperor of Demise talk with Kobayashi

When Tohru’s father, the Emperor of Demise, first appeared in Season 1 to drag Tohru back to the other world, the Chaos Faction member appeared as a draconian dictator. However, Season 2 revealed that the Emperor of Demise has his own attachments to the human world. Despite his mistrust of them, he even has a human confidant in Mr. Magatsuchi, Shouta’s father and Kobayashi’s supervisor, who he visits across the realms. He even named Tohru after the original author of Magatsuchi’s dubiously “localized” book series.

The Emperor’s controlling nature is also revealed as thinly veiled protectiveness, as he has made arrangements with the God of the human world to protect Tohru if necessary. Nevertheless, it has not been revealed how the Emperor first met Mr. Magatsuchi or what initially kindled his connection to the human world, leaving plenty of room for further backstory.

What Was Kobayashi And Kanna’s Fight About?

Kobayashi and Kanna Kamui bond over the latter's summer homework

Kanna Kamui is often hailed as the show’s most adorable character, staying cute and cuddly in all her forms. Still, as a dragon with the mental maturity of a third-grader, she still has occasional fights with her parental figures. In Episode 10 of this season, Kanna has an argument with Kobayashi and runs away from home. Although her retreat takes her on an adventure in New York with a new friend, it’s never revealed what she and Kobayashi actually fought over.

Despite this, Kobayashi is shown worrying herself to exhaustion by the time Kanna comes home, and by the second half of the episode, all is well, with the two bonding over Kanna’s summer homework. It’s a relief to know that Kanna has a home she can always return to, as she was initially banished from the other world as punishment for a prank, the details of which are also left unknown.

Will Kobayashi Ever Eat Tohru’s Tail?

Tohru attempts to feed Kobayashi her tail

Aside from speculating whether or not any of these tries will ever be successful, one can’t help but wonder what Tohru’s tail tastes like. According to Tohru herself, the appendage is delicious, with a sweet and creamy flavor. However, this may be her personal sense of taste, as no human palate has ever verified this claim.

Can There Be An End To The War Of The Dragons?

The group of dragons that have congregated around Kobayashi, Takiya, Saikawa and Shouta is unique, as it contains members from the Chaos, Harmony and Spectator factions all living in relative fellowship. Season 2 revealed many of the factors driving the feud between dragons in the other world, as well as the role the gods and humans play in it.

Although eons of bloodshed and tragedy have taken a toll on all the main dragons of the series, their decision to live in the human world leaves the current events of the conflict up to the imagination. A conclusion to the fight seems to be a pipedream, but insight from the human world can perhaps contribute to easing tensions in future storylines.

How Will Tohru And Kobayashi’s “Wedding” Turn Out?

Tohru tries to get Kobayashi to marry her at the flower viewing

The season’s final episode saw the dragons and their human roommates coming together for a flower viewing party. Placing herself in charge of the activities, Tohru capped off the event with an immediate wedding announcement for Kobayashi and herself — without Kobayashi having any knowledge of the matter.

The episode ends lightheartedly with the cast chasing after the two, but Shouta has a premonition that the ceremony may result in something bigger. In any case, while Kobayashi is unlikely to consent to marriage right now, she still coyly refrains from revealing the nature of her feelings for Tohru. Regardless, her closing smile makes it clear that she cherishes even the most uproarious of moments with her.
