Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S Episode 8 is mostly very silly, but its final segment gets surprisingly emotional in a Toy Story-esque way.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S Episode 8, “The World’s Only (Insert Phrase You Like Here),” now streaming on Crunchyroll.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is an odd anime to describe because of just how tonally varied it is. It can jump between funny, serious, action-packed, horny, offensive and heartwarming, sometimes within the same episode. Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S Episode 8 mostly sticks to the sillier end of the spectrum, even for most of its final segment, but that final segment gets surprisingly emotional.
The first of the episode’s three segments is the worst. It’s another one focused on Lucoa and Shouta. The story of Shouta trying to use advanced magic to create a Father’s Day gift is better than some Shouta stories, and it’s nice to see Takiya become a more positive mentor figure for the young mage as they bond over video games. The segment’s positive features, however, get overshadowed by the numbing repetition of one hacky joke: Lucoa thinking Father’s Day is “Tits Day” (“chichi” means both “father” and “breasts” in Japanese). The ending punchline is more gross sexual harassment, though it’s followed up by a cuter epilogue where Kanna reveals she sees Kobayashi as her “father.”
The second segment is equally silly but the comedy is much funnier. This part focuses on Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid‘s central and most entertaining character dynamic — the relationship between Kobayashi and Tohru. In this story, Kobayashi has a fever and is taking a day off from work. Tohru vows to be Kobayashi’s nurse on top of being her maid. This leads to what might be her worst attempt at cooking yet, as well as some yuri fanservice with Tohru wiping away her master’s sweat. Pushing her nurse act even further, Tohru flies back to her homeworld to acquire medicine for Kobayashi. Kobayashi’s already feeling better but takes the strange pills anyway — which happen to be meant for beastmen and turn her into a catgirl.
Episode 8’s final segment focuses on Ilulu’s job at the candy store, and while there’s more silly sexual humor with how Take interprets Ilulu and Tohru’s behavior, the central story is more serious. Someone has left their doll in the store, and Ilulu is determined to return the doll back to its rightful owner. It reminds her of the doll she lost in the war and becomes sentimentally important to her. Tohru and Kobayashi figure out where the doll was purchased and from there help track down its owner.
It turns out the doll wasn’t lost, but intentionally abandoned by its owner, a high school girl who was bullied by her classmates for still having dolls and tossed her beloved possession away in an attempt to prove her maturity. The girl regretted this decision immediately but feels it’s too late to take the doll back. Ilulu tells her it’s not too late, and to tell her doll “Welcome home.” The episode still has time for some more crude jokes between Ilulu and Take afterward, but this final story is still a potential tearjerker in the vein of The Velveteen Rabbit or the Toy Story movies.
New episodes of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S stream Wednesdays on Crunchyroll.
