Miles Morales went up against a mandroid and defeated it with one well-placed venom blast, so how powerful can these Tony Stark suits really be?
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #30 on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Miles Morales has long since proven himself to be a Spider-Man in his own right. He got the chance to reinforce this notion when a Mandroid began terrorizing a taco truck in his neighborhood in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #30 by Saladin Ahmed, Carmen Carnero, Erick Arciniega and VC’s Cory Petit. After a brief skirmish, Miles managed to destroy the thing with one precise venom blast. The Mandroid was destroyed and the conspiracy theorist piloting it was apprehended, but highlighted just how easy it is to acquire a dangerous weapon online — even ones that Tony Stark built to protect people.
The Mandroid series armor was originally designed by Tony Stark. First debuting in Avengers #94 by Roy Thomas and Neal Adams, the Mandroids were created for agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to use in the field. The idea was that regular agents could equip themselves with the Mandroid armor and be better able to handle the capture of a superpowered criminal. Unfortunately, the Mandroid line would suffer a history of misuse from third parties, either by rogue agents who enhanced them for their own purposes or by S.H.I.E.L.D. infiltrators who deployed Mandroids for their own nefarious purposes.
And now Miles has become a part of that time-honored practice. While swinging his way across town to a date with Starling, Miles was called down by some civilians who told him about a robot tearing up the streets. Recognizing the Mandroid, Miles quickly struck at its most vulnerable point, the glass visor that allows its user to see. Once he could stick a hand inside and reach the vulnerable hardware, Miles sent a venom blast through the Mandroid, causing it to fall apart and dislodging its pilot, a very unhinged conspiracy theorist who believed the taco truck he was attacking was serving frost giant meat.
Miles’ discovered that the assailant got the Mandroid suit from the internet after finding it on a reseller’s website. This highlights just how much Mandroids have fallen into the trope of being easy for villains to turn against heroes. What was once a highly dangerous piece of military technology developed by the same mind who conceived the Iron Man armor has now been reduced to a purchase on the internet by any guy living in a basement who spends too much time on conspiracy sites.
But that might have been Miles’ saving grace here. Mandroids are highly dangerous, designed to do combat with powered individuals and this man was clearly a novice. It could have been so much worse if piloted by someone who was skilled in the practice. Civilian casualties might have been higher and Miles might not have been able to defeat the armor. But because of it’s used status and in all likelihood, outdated design, Miles dismantled the armor inside of a minute.
Regardless, it’s genuinely frightening how easily something so dangerous was acquired by someone who is clearly unstable. Should this ever happen again, the hope is that the Mandroids will be just as easily defeated as it was this time.
