Miles Morales: Spider-Man #30 drop hints as to who may be Miles’ future wife, and draws a striking parallel to the life of Peter Parker.
WARNING: The following article contains spoilers from Miles Morales: Spider-Man #30. available now from Marvel.
The struggle of balancing being a superhero and having a personal life has been a common theme for both Peter Parker and Miles Morales. As the latter attempts to return home to get ready for a date, he is constantly pulled into saving his city’s inhabitants in one way or another. Even as he makes it to his date, Miles Morales: Spider-Man #30 (by Saladin Ahmed, Carmen Carnero, Erick Arciniega and VC’s Cory Petit) closes with the paid assassin Taskmaster revealing a plan to ruin the hero’s evening.
One of the issue’s back up stories, “Don’t Run Jux,” (by Cody Ziglar, Anthony Piper and Petit) offers a glimpse ten years into Miles’ future, still saving the city and offering life lessons but also seemingly married. The two stories may be connected by the girl he’s heading to meet in the main story, fellow hero and former Champions teammate, Starling.
The issue opens with Miles feeling good about his life and his new, yet familiar suit, heading home to change and get ready for his date with Starling. Unfortunately, his trip is postponed by an angry man in Mandroid armor and two little girls who have lost their dog. Helping in both situations, he scrambles to a rooftop to change and is surprised to see Starling, still in her costume as well.
Even though Miles may think he’s the only one who is trying to balance everything, he and Starling both had similar experiences leading up to their date. Considering the line from the back up story, Starling being the wife Miles is referring to makes a lot of sense. As heroes, they understand the responsibility that comes with their powers, and really appreciate the time they have together. As the two share a kiss, Miles muses that this is one of the rare times superheroes get to be happy.
Operating under the name Starling, Tianna Toomes is the granddaughter of Adrien Toomes, who is better known as The Vulture. She was introduced in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #5 (by Ahmed, Javier Garrón, David Curiel, and Petit). When the two first met, she was on a crusade to kill Tombstone with no qualms about hurting anyone who stood in her way. She even initially mistook Miles as one of Tombstone’s henchmen which led them to a quick scuffle before he was able to talk to her.
When she first appeared, Miles’ first thought was that she looked like an angel, and as the two talked there seemed to be some chemistry between them. When Miles tried to explain she didn’t have to kill Tombstone to get justice, she was amused by his empathy and moral code thinking it was cute. In the end, he was able to talk her out of killing Tombstone, and she revealed to him her true identity. With Miles unwilling to do the same at that point, she flew away.
There are many ways Miles and Starling parallel the famous relationship between Peter and Mary Jane. Starling possesses many of the traits that Miles wishes he had, especially her confidence in who she is. Miles has always had a tendency to hide his identity, believing it to be the best way to keep those he cared about safe. Putting the mask on gives him the confidence and comfort to be who he wants to be, untethered by his personal life in a way similar to Peter. While not mirroring it word for word, Miles’ first thought of Starling being an angel is reminiscent of Mary Jane telling Peter that he hit the jackpot when they first met.
The two tying the knot down the road can be a lot of speculation but it wouldn’t necessarily be a wild leap. They understand the demands of being a superhero which in turn makes them appreciate their time together even more.
