Phase One of the MCU was a great start to the powerhouse universe that exists in cinema today. Many other franchises have attempted to recreate the same magic, but were unsuccessful. The MCU was slowly developed over years, with multiple films introducing fans to a variety of interesting characters.
With many of the films being nearly a decade old by now, not everything within them has withstood the test of time. Many elements have already grown outdated, especially as more stories are being told and the characters continue to evolve today. Even the visual effects continue to improve.
10 Villains Other Than Loki Are Not Memorable
For the longest time, Loki was known as the MCU’s best villain, which is why he was the main villain in the first Avengers movie. The other villains include men in business suits who just want to profit off of Tony Stark’s work, a villain who has the same powers as the Hulk, and a former HYDRA leader.
The MCU has done an excellent job of introducing better villains in more recent years, but their earlier villains were pretty weak.
9 Thor’s Bleached Eyebrows Are Very Noticeable Now
Many fans liked Thor’s look in Thor: Ragnarok, proving that characters could still be iconic and recognizable even if they didn’t wear the exact same thing that they wore in the comics.
For fans returning to the first movie, it is much more noticeable that Thor’s eyebrows were bleached to match his hair. While this little detail didn’t bother too many people when the film first came out, more people are noticing it now.
8 The Incredible Hulk Made It Seem Like Bruce Could Control His Powers
At the end of The Incredible Hulk, it seemed like Bruce could control his powers. He spent most of the movie trying to suppress his powers rather than to gain control of them, but after a countless number of failed attempts, he finally embraced his powers.
Banner is seen meditating, and is able to bring out the other personality. The future movies chose to retcon this, as he developed a stronger fear of transforming and even lost control a few times.
7 The Incredible Hulk Left Many Things Unanswered
The Incredible Hulk left a few things unanswered, making fans wonder what happened to a few characters. After Betty Ross and Bruce parted ways, Betty wasn’t seen in the MCU again. Mr. Blue, also known as Samuel Sterns, was infected by Bruce’s blood during the film, but never makes another appearance in later movies.
Abomination also makes an appearance in Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings, but it is never explained why he isn’t in captivity.
6 Edward Norton As The Hulk Makes Fans Uncertain If The Film Is Part Of The MCU
Edward Norton was the original actor that portrayed Bruce Banner in the MCU. Due to this, quite a few fans don’t know if The Incredible Hulk is actually a part of the MCU.
Regardless of whether or not fans prefer Norton or Mark Ruffalo, they give two completely different interpretations of the character, which makes the original film feel inconsistent with later films in the MCU. Even Disney+ doesn’t include the film in the MCU’s Phase One lineup.
5 Early Thanos Doesn’t Look Quite As Good
Early Thanos did not have the appeal that he does in Avengers: Infinity War. During early films, all he did was sit in his chair and allow other people to do the work for him. The effects were also not visually pleasing either, making him a far too bright purple.
These effects don’t hold up very well, and because of that, his appearance at the post-credits scene in Avengers isn’t as exciting as it could be.
4 Natasha Didn’t Have Her Own Film
Ever since Black Widow appeared in Iron Man 2 and Avengers, fans were asking Marvel to create a film based on her. Unfortunately, this wouldn’t come to pass until years later. Many fans were disappointed with the film because it had much less relevance now that Natasha is dead.
It also painted her in a really poor light, as this hero and supposed inspiration for young girls actually nearly killed a little girl in order to join the Avengers. It is hard to look at her the same way after these events.
3 The Warriors Three Seem Much More Insignificant
The Warriors Three were Thor’s friends and some of the strongest warriors in Asgard. They always had Thor’s back no matter what the circumstances were, but eventually, they faded into obscurity after the first film and met their demise in the third.
With this in mind, it doesn’t feel as though they brought much value to the story, especially since fans don’t see Thor taking much time to mourn them.
2 Thor Leaving Jane & Promising To Come Back
At the end of the first film, Thor promised to come back for Jane, and at the same time, Jane was searching for a way to find him. Their romance in the first film doesn’t hold up since their relationship fell to pieces.
Thor did come back to see her, but he wasn’t there for her nearly as much as he should have been. This makes it difficult to get invested in their romance.
1 The Portal In The Sky Is A Tired Cliché
The climax of so many superhero films includes a portal in the sky, a cliché that fans are already tired of. The Avengers is not the first, nor the last to use it, but since this cliché has been used so many times, it is hard for fans to go back to this film and enjoy it.
When the film was first released, this trope wasn’t so overused. Additionally, fans were much more focused on seeing the heroes together for the first time, which is an experience that can’t be repeated today.
