MCU Theory: Someone Betrays the Eternals

[ad_1]

Marvel Studios’ Eternals introduces a host of new heroes to face off against the Deviants; however, one Eternal could betray their allies.

Eternals is primed to bring in a huge roster of new heroes and villains that could change the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever. In the comics, the Eternals use their powers to protect the human race and take on their rivals, the Deviants. Deviants seek to enslave humanity, and the two factions have been in conflict for centuries. However, following a long absence, it looks like the Deviants are returning, and while they pose a threat, they may not be the enemies the Eternals should be most concerned with.

The Eternals are the creations of the Celestials and are essentially immortal. In that time, they have come to nurture and love humanity. While they may have the abilities and iconography of Gods, they are just as flawed as humans. Some have unconditional love for humanity and will stop at nothing to keep them safe, like Sersi. Others have developed their own personal interests and prefer to serve those ideals before anyone else’s. Because of these traits, a couple of Eternals may betray their own kind for themselves or the Deviants.

The most obvious Eternal that could betray the team is Druig. In comics and film, he has the ability to control the minds of others. He occasionally uses this for villainous means in the comics, but he only does so for selfish reasons. As a result, it wouldn’t be surprising if he decides to change the established order to see what happens if he betrays his comrades. Certain hints to his descent are also teased in the trailers, with him controlling a small community like a cult. That same community is also attacked by a Deviant that Ikaris must face. While it’s possible they attack coincidentally, it could also be a trap set by the Eternal to kill Ikaris for the Deviant leader, Kro.

Kro is one of the more complicated Deviants, and while he has immense power and a leadership position, he is still susceptible to emotions, like love. As a result, he shares a romantic relationship with the Eternal Thena. In the trailer, there is a scene where he has Thena tied up as he talks to her, but he doesn’t seem to treat her as a threat, talking with a calm tone. Thus, there’s a possibility their relationship from the comics will remain intact and, in turn, create conflict within the Eternal’s ranks.

A recently released toy from the film explains that Thena also has a relationship with Gilgamesh, but that could be a clever distraction to keep elements of the story intact. One reason for this could be because Thena will eventually betray her fellow Eternals in favor of Kro, whether to help the Deviants or him specifically. While Thena isn’t a villain in the comics, her relationship with Kro and potential betrayal serves as a great example of how complicated each member is.

Eternals will surely look at the concept of superheroes in a way that hasn’t been fully explored before. After protecting the Earth for centuries, it’ll be interesting to see how these characters deal with human ideas of love and happiness — specifically, how much they are willing to give up for both concepts. With so many characters on the team, the odds for betrayal are high.

Eternals releases in theaters on Nov. 5.
