In this new exclusive video, CBR goes into the MCU theory that Black Widow’s Taskmaster is actually a Winter Soldier.

The upcoming Black Widow movie is set to feature Taskmaster as a major villain, introducing them to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the process. However, there are still a number of major mysteries surrounding just who Taskmaster is behind their mask. In this video, we’re going to go into the theory that Taskmaster is actually the product of the same program that turned Bucky Barnes into the Winter Soldier.

Created by David Michelinie and George Pérez, Tony Masters/Taskmaster first apepared in 1980’s Avengers #195. The powerful mercenary is able to essentially mimic the fighting styles of his opponents, making him incredibly deadly. And while we know that the MCU version of Taskmaster will be able to mimic the abilities of the Avengers, there are still a lot that Marvel Studios is keeping under wraps, which is where the Winter Soldier Program comes in.

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, it’s not totally clear just what shape the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will take. While there’s a good indication the characters that Disney acquired from 21st Century Fox will soon arrive, there’s not much solid information on just when or how that might happen. Right now, there are a lot of potential directions the MCU could go in the future, though exactly which one it will take remains to be seen.

Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Mason and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. The film arrives in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access July 9.
