While most fans are familiar with the Snaps of the MCU, many of the Infinity Stones have been used in other instances over the years. It’s not surprising, considering the Stones were ancient relics from before the creation of the known universe.
Some Stones get more attention than others, but every single Stone is shown being used at least one other time outside of a Snap in the MCU. There are also probably dozens of users unbeknownst to fans, and if the Stones do return, perhaps more of their history will be revealed.
6 Soul Stone: 3 Known Users
The Soul Stone was easily the most mysterious of the six Infinity Stones and didn’t even make an appearance until Infinity War. The Stone was used by Thanos, “Professor” Hulk, and Iron Man in four different Snaps between two movies.
In addition to the Snaps, Thanos actually used the Soul Stone at least one other time. During his fight against Dr. Strange on Titan, Strange had Thanos bound with hundreds of Crimson Bands of Cyttorak. To overcome this, Thanos activated the Power Stone as well as the Soul Stone. Considering Strange had split himself into so many duplicates, Thanos likely needed to use the Soul Stone to find the real Strange to properly deliver a blow from the Power Stone.
5 Reality Stone: 5 Known Users
Again, the Reality Stone was used in a total of four Snaps between three characters, though Thanos did use it on a few other occasions. (Perhaps the Reality Stone was his favorite?) He used the Stone to get the drop on the Guardians on Knowhere, incapacitate Drax and Mantis, and turn Peter’s gun and ammo into bubbles. He also managed to alter the entire reality of his dilapidated homeworld, Titan.
Way before Thanos got his hands on the Stone, the leader of the Dark Elves known as Malekith attempted to use the Stone to return the universe to one of darkness. Jane Foster also briefly had the Aether coursing through her veins, resulting in her unintentionally throwing a few guards/officers through the air. While Bor was responsible for sealing the Aether away, there is no indication that he or his men ever used it.
4 Time Stone: 6+ Known Users
The Time Stone was first seen being used against an apple and then the ruler of the Dark Dimension, Dormammu. Dr. Strange trapped the entity in a time loop for what very well could have been years, forcing Dormammu to concede and bargain with Strange. While the Ancient One was never really seen using the Stone aside from when she handed it to Hulk, it’s assumed she used it as well during her run as Sorcerer Supreme.
Agamotto was the creator of the Eye and presumably the first known wielder of the Time Stone. It’s suggested that Dr. Strange is the latest in a long line of Sorcerer Supremes, so one might assume that they all may have used the Stone at some point. However, there haven’t been any reveals with respect to other Sorcerer Supremes or what number Strange happens to be, so the three that fans know of are really all that should be included. Thanos also used the Time Stone to rewind Vision’s death only to kill him himself by ripping the Mind Stone from his forehead.
3 Mind Stone: 10+ Known Users
The Mind Stone is first introduced in the MCU during the first Avengers film when Loki entered S.H.I.E.L.D.’s base via the Tesseract and began turning agents, Hawkeye, and Dr. Selvig to his side. After Loki was stopped and before Ultron was created, the scepter fell into the hands of Hydra, specifically Baron Von Strucker. He and his team of scientists used the Stone on many volunteer test subjects, hoping to unlock incredible powers. Unfortunately, there were only two survivors, Wanda and Pietro Maximoff. They received special powers and/or had latent abilities unlocked by the Stone during Hydra’s testing.
Once the Mind Stone was extracted from the scepter, it found a new home in Vision’s forehead for many years until Thanos arrived on Earth. Shuri may not have used the Stone in a traditional sense, but she certainly worked on it with some high-tech equipment, likely yielding some interesting and beneficial data. Aside from the Snaps, the last known user of the Mind Stone is Captain America when he tagged his past self with the scepter after informing him that Bucky was still alive.
2 Space Stone: 12+ Known Users
The Space Stone has had the longest tenure in the MCU, having been introduced all the way back in the first Captain America film. Both S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hydra studied and ran tests on the cube for years with a myriad of scientists tasked with this research. Howard Stark and Arnim Zola are both known to have worked with the Stone specifically as well as Dr. Selvig after his experience with S.H.I.E.L.D. in New Mexico.
Red Skull was the first person to successfully weaponize the Space Stone, and Mar-Vell was able to create some sort of the Light-Speed Engine using Tesseract-powered technology. The Stone also embued Carol Danvers with awesome powers resulting in her transformation into Captain Marvel. Aside from the Snaps, Thanos also used the Stone to seamlessly travel between places like Knowhere, Titan, and Wakanda.
Thor actually used the Space Stone to return home after the first Avengers film since the Bifrost was still destroyed at the time. One can’t mention the Space Stone without mentioning Loki as he had a long-standing relationship with the Tesseract, most recently, a Loki Variant used the cube to escape New York in 2012 resulting in the sensational Loki series.
1 Power Stone: 18+ Known Users (19 If You Count Thor)
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, fans are shown a brief glimpse into the history of the Power Stone as the Collector shows the Guardians several historical clips of the Infinity Stones, including a couple of the Power Stone. A massive being believed to be the Celestial known as Eson the Searcher is shown using the Stone to destroy an entire planet. Another group of eight hooded figures can be seen attempting to wield the Power Stone, but it becomes too great for them and they are destroyed.
The Collector’s slave girl, Carina, grabbed the Stone, resulting in her painful death and the destruction of the Collector’s shop. The Guardians escaped with the Stone, but not long after, Ronan took it and applied it to his war hammer so he could destroy Xandar. Eventually, Quill grabbed the Stone, but it wasn’t until Gamora, Rocket, and Drax grabbed onto him that they were able to use the Stone to defeat Ronan.
The Guardians left the Stone on Xandar with the Nova Corps for safekeeping, but Thanos later took it from them. He then attempted to kill Thor with it as a way to convince Loki to give him the Tesseract. With the Power Stone (as well as all the other Stones), Thanos then performs his initial two Snaps.
