Todd McFarlane shows off a Batman figure based off of his own artwork from the 1987 story Year Two, which ran in Detective Comics #575-578.
Todd McFarlane has revealed McFarlane Toys’ upcoming Batman: Year Two figure, featuring an extremely long cape inspired by his own artwork on the 1987 story.
“The coolest, biggest Batman cape we’ve ever done,” McFarlane said when describing the Target exclusive figure, which became available for pre-order on Sept. 3 as part of the retailer’s Fall Geek Out event.
Every Batman: Year Two figure comes with attachable arms. Once the arms are on the figure, the lengthy, stylized cape can be swapped out for a more modest fabric cape. Also packaged with the figure is a card showing Batman against the moon, and over 1,000 units will be signed by McFarlane himself.
Batman: Year Two, written by Mike W. Barr with artwork by McFarlane and Alan Davis, originally released in four parts in Detective Comics #575-578. The story picked up after Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s Batman: Year One and re-introduced a combination of new and traditional elements to the Batman mythos. Among these were a costumed villain named the Reaper who protected Gotham prior to the Dark Knight and was willing to kill criminals, Batman undergoing the unusual decision to temporarily use a gun, and a shaky alliance with Joe Chill — the mugger who killed Thomas and Martha Wayne.
The McFarlane Toys’ sculpt comes from a notable moment in Detective Comics #577 where Batman stands in the graveyard of his parents and muses on the nature of firearms and allying himself with Chill.
