Matt Murdock Made a Major Life Decision Thanks to…Bullseye?!

[ad_1]

As Matt Murdock finds himself at another personal crossroads, he decides to take drastic measures informed by revelations about Bullseye.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Daredevil #34, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

If there’s one supervillain that could give the Kingpin a run for his money in tragically steering the course of Matt Murdock’s life, it’s Bullseye. In addition to terrorizing New York City for years, forcing the Man Without Fear to intervene in increasingly violent showdowns, the deranged serial killer has murdered several people close to Murdock, including his great loves Elektra Natchios and Karen Page. And as news of Bullseye’s latest rampage through the streets of Manhattan reach Murdock, who is still serving out a prison sentence for manslaughter while on the superhero beat in Hell’s Kitchen, Daredevil decides to make the fateful decision to break out of prison and stop Bullseye once and for all.

Murdock accepting a plea deal in exchange for a truncated prison sentence was something of an extension of his persistent and deep sense of guilt over his life decisions. His best friend Foggy Nelson and ex-girlfriend Kirsten McDuffie were convinced they would successfully fight the manslaughter charge before Murdock decided to take responsibility for it in exchange for keeping his identity secret. During the crossover event King in Black, Murdock even had the opportunity to escape from prison when it was attacked by invading symbiotes but opted to remain and continue to serve out his sentence. Murdock even resisted a request to serve as an FBI informant to report on the prison’s shady, backdoor dealings before being called out on his stubborn insistence towards self-flagellation. And in Daredevil #34 — by Chip Zdarsky, Stefano Landini, Marcio Menyz and VC’s Clayton Cowles — Murdock finally reveals what convinces him he’s better off on the outside.

Things in prison have gone from bad to worse as the entire cellblock descends into chaos, with the inmates taking over the place. Murdock discovered that the warden was using an illegal street drug known as RE-CID, a controlled substance that encouraged its users to become violently erratic, with the drug being unleashed on the entire prison population, including Murdock himself. In the confusion, Daredevil violently reasserted control over his fellow inmates, leading to a police standoff until Daredevil’s FBI contact Cole North informs Murdock that Bullseye in on the loose again, cutting another bloody path through Manhattan and eluding the authorities.

As soon as Daredevil learns what Bullseye is up to, he drops everything he’s doing, now with only one goal in mind: To finally break out of prison and track down his old nemesis. Wearing a gas mask to help navigate through the confusion as the authorities flood the facility with tear gas, Daredevil sneaks into the back of McDuffie’s car, who had arrived at the scene when she learned Murdock had taken over the prison during the riot, and rides with her back to New York to confront his old enemy.

For months, nothing could budge Daredevil from moving forward with completing his prison sentence, no matter how much his friends pleaded with him to reconsider and outside circumstances went off the rails. However, Bullseye is such a deeply personal threat and cause of so much pain in Matt Murdock’s life that his murderous return is the one thing that’ll snap Daredevil out of the guilt-ridden self-punishment he has endured lately. The only problem is that now Bullseye far outnumbers his familiar foe and Murdock remains out of his right mind thanks to the RE-CID dose, putting the advantage towards the supervillain’s favor.
