The world of Eternia has returned with Dark Horse’s prequel to the upcoming Netflix series Masters of the Universe: Revelation. While epic battles and magical confrontations are nothing new to the franchise, the time-traveling journey of the opening issue has just broken the mold by bringing together three generations of Eternia’s champions for the very first time.
When King Randor is left comatose after an attack in his own palace on the part of the interdimensional beast known as the Orlax, He-Man and his allies are helpless to offer any help of their own. The Sorceress believes that the answer to their problem may exist in the past, as the Orlax had run in fright at the sight of He-Man’s Sword of Power, and as such, she sends him through the Cosmic Corridor and time itself. As He-Man passes through the ages, he witnesses King Grayskull training his sons, the princes D’Are and Ro, as well as D’Are’s own abduction by the forces of King Hiss including the Orlax. Unfortunately, neither He-Man nor King Grayskull himself are able to save the young prince. But after saving the rest of the royal family, He-Man is given another gift as he returns to the present; he’s given a glimpse of the legacy that he is carrying on as he stands beside his ancestors King Grayskull and He-Ro for the first time.
He-Man has been the champion of Eternia since the Masters of the Universe franchise began, but the lore of his world stretches back several generations before him. Namely, the legend of King Grayskull made him one of the breakout fan-favorites from 2002’s He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Of course, Revelation is a follow-up to the 1983 original series, which gives it a chance to move in slightly different directions with Eternian history.
One of these changes involves the introduction of King Grayskull’s son, Prince Ro, who grew into the champion known as He-Ro. As familiar as fans might be with He-Man and King Grayskull, He-Ro is only really being seen for the first time ever in this series, as all of his previous appearances were in the form of action figures originally meant for unproduced toylines. Presumably, He-Ro lived a life much like his fellow champions, one filled with high-flying adventures and jaw-dropping feats.
Now that time travel has been made an indelible part of Revelation‘s world, King Grayskull and He-Ro could very well show back up once more. It is also the only thing separating the villains of this world from their own ancestors should they become aware of the Cosmic Corridor’s capabilities.
While He-Man’s recent comic book adventures have seen him jumping across dimensions, this raises the enticing idea of a true intergenerational He-Men team-up inside the show’s canon. But considering how dangerous time travel can be, there’s no telling what kind of mighty threat could drive these three back together.
