Eagle-eyed Marvel fans spotted a reference to a classic Incredible Hulk comic book in the teaser trailer for Insomniac Games’ Wolverine.
Marvel fans have spotted a fun Easter Egg in the teaser trailer for Insomniac Games’ Wolverine, showcasing the developer’s attention to detail.
As spotted by Twitter user @Puertorock77_, Marvel’s Wolverine‘s teaser trailer contains a sneaky reference to Logan’s first appearance. Roughly 18 seconds into the cinematic trailer, during the shot of Logan sitting at the upturned bar, a license plate can be seen on a shelf to his immediate right. The plate simply reads, “HLK 181.”
The letters displayed on the plate can be taken as shorthand for “HULK,” Marvel’s other angry loner. Taken alongside the number, it’s likely that the plate is a reference to The Incredible Hulk #181, a classic comic book published in 1974, written by Len Wein and penciled by Herb Trimpe. It also marks the first appearance of Wolverine in the Marvel Universe.
While fans of the character are speculating that the Easter Egg is a hint as to the game’s plot, that particular angle is currently unconfirmed. Little is known about Marvel’s Wolverine beyond the fact that the game is still in very early development. Brian Horton, the game’s creative director, recently took to Twitter to confirm that Insomniac Games’ upcoming title is a full game and will feature a mature tone.
Given the brief yet highly detailed trailer for Marvel’s Wolverine, fans have been hard at work dissecting every frame, hoping to detect more information. A chalkboard identified in the aforementioned clip includes the name “The Princess Bar,” leading many to believe the game will be set in Madripoor, a fictional city in South East Asia known for its stark imbalance between the wealthy and the impoverished. First introduced in Marvel Comics Presents #1, Madripoor’s debut featured Wolverine trawling through the city, fighting a variety of underworld criminals, to save “the Tiger.”
Beyond Marvel’s Wolverine, fans of superhero video games have a lot to be excited about. Insomniac Games also recently announced Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the sequel to its highly successful and critically acclaimed 2018 open-world action game. Spider-Man will also be swinging into Marvel’s Avengers in late 2021, although developer Crystal Dynamics has yet to provide fans with a specific release date.
Marvel’s Wolverine currently doesn’t have a launch date but is confirmed to be a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Whether the game also launches on PlayStation 4 remains to be seen.
