Marvel’s Winter Guard #1 Gives the Red Guardian an MCU Makeover

[ad_1]

A preview for Winter Guard #1 sees Red Guardian sporting a look closer to his MCU counterpart portrayed by David Harbour in Black Widow.

A new preview from Marvel Comics shows Alexei Shostakov, the Red Guardian, adopting the character’s appearance from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Widow.

The Russian super soldier was portrayed by David Harbour in the hero’s live action debut. Harbour had been growing a massive beard and longer hair for Stanger Things Season 4, which would see his character Jim Hopper trapped in a Russian prison. However, Marvel wanted to throw Harbour into a Russian prison as well while playing Red Guardian, so the look was instead used for the film, his Stranger Things appearance changing as a result. In the preview for Winter Guard #1, Red Guardian can be seen sporting a similar look to the unkept beard Harbour bore throughout the movie.

The preview opens with the former Black Widow, Yelena Belova, discussing one of Marvel Comics’ more recent character creations, the Red Widow, with the universe’s main Black Widow, Natasha Romanoff. The Red Widow was first created by Jason Aaron and David Marquez and debuted in Avengers #700 in 2018. The Avengers are currently facing the Russian threat in the “World War She-Hulk” arc from the series, and the preview sees Natasha seeking advice and help from Yelena, who claims that the Red Widow is a challenging adversary – and possibly not even human.

Based on the preview, it appears that the series will be a flashback tale to a time when Yelena and the Red Guardian wound up in the Red Widow’s crosshairs. We see Yelena infiltrating a Russian base, picking guards off one by one with stealth and precision. She interrupts the final guard at the command post from alerting the base to the attack, but before she knocks him unconscious, Red Guardian stops her. He can be seen with a beard similar to Harbour’s portrayal, but his uniform contains more black than white when compared to his MCU counterpart.

Red Guardian halts Yelena because he does not wish for their presence to go unseen, and wants all of Russia to know that he has returned home. This decision grabs the attention of the Red Widow, who gives a brief recap to readers of Yelena and Red Guardian’s respective histories, claiming the two to be nothing more than failures and mistakes made by Russia. The preview ends with Red Widow demanding the two be hunted down and taken out.
