The strangest Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel Comics has already made an appearance in the MCU, sparking the question of when (or if) he will return.
The Marvel Universe is no stranger to creating legacy characters. While many readers are aware of examples like Miles Morales and Kamala Khan, there are also future versions of classic characters like Doctor Strange. A great example of this can be found in the original Guardians of the Galaxy comic in the heroic Krugarr, who is the team’s resident Sorcerer Supreme.
In the larger roster of the Marvel Universe, Krugarr is a relatively unknown character. That said, he is one of the most powerful magic users in the universe. He also appeared alongside the classic Guardians team in an after credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, sparking the question of who this odd creature is and the likelihood of him returning to the MCU at some point in the future.
Who is Krugarr?
Krugarr was created by Jim Valentino and first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Annual #1. Known as a Lem, this species has a worm-like appearance and is supposed to have a long but still unknown lifespan. Although he lacks a mouth, Krugarr is highly intelligent and has found a way to effectively communicate in the comics, although the version seen in the MCU may be depicted as mute. He became the Sorcerer Supreme after learning magic directly from Doctor Strange.
Krugarr was an exceptional student to Doctor Strange and later gained the Cloak of Levitation as part of his outfit. Upon completing the training of his eventual successor, Strange became the new Ancient One, with Krugarr taking up Strange’s previous mantle. As an ally of the Guardians, the alien sorcerer can cast powerful spells, astral project and call upon various magical beings. Because of the nearly limitless potential of his powers, the future Sorcerer Supreme is also one of the most vital members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and has even taken on an apprentice of his own.
When Could He Reappear In the MCU?
When Krugarr appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, little information was given as to his identity and abilities. However, by having him use magic to emote, it was clear that the character at least understood the mystic arts enough to cast spells. But without his cloak, it also appeared that he wasn’t at his full strength. The scene also promised that Stakar’s Ravagers would again reappear without establishing when. With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness on the horizon, the film’s stakes could require all hands on deck. As a result, Krugarr could reappear to aid strange. Doing so could show how advanced Krugarr is in his education, making him a great ally and perhaps even show Strange teaching him magic.
The MCU is no stranger to introducing little-known side characters and not returning to them for some time. This has been evidenced with villains like Abomination and characters like Trevor Slattery. As a result, seeing Krugarr again, especially as magic plays a larger role, seems highly likely. But without knowing the circumstances of his potential return, all fans can do at the moment is continue to wait patiently.
