Venom #1, written by Al Ewing and Ram V, focuses on both father and son as Eddie Brock patrols the stars and Dylan Brock hits the streets.
A trailer for the latest Venom comic series showcases both Eddie Brock and his son Dylan’s intertwined stories, with the elder member of the family patrolling the stars as the new King in Black and the younger Brock taking to the streets as the latest inheritor of Marvel’s most famous symbiote.
The video shows an army of interplanetary symbiotes led by Eddie Brock, as well as Dylan’s new Venom costume, which incorporates chains. It also hints at important characters to appear over the course of the series — including Kang the Conqueror, whose displeasure at Eddie Brock’s new galaxy-spanning abilities was hinted at in Free Comic Book Day: Spider-Man/Venom #1.
“When my editors at Marvel reached out about taking on Venom alongside Al Ewing and Bryan Hitch, I was not prepared for the kind of creative thrill it has been ever since,” Ram V said. “This story is going to expand and push the symbiote narrative and lore in even more unexpected and fantastic directions. It is also an utter thrill having the sort of call and response mechanic I’ve had with a writer like Al and an artist of Bryan’s caliber. Fans and new readers, strap in — you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.”
When news of Venom‘s interconnecting stories was first revealed, Ram V said that he would delve into Dylan’s efforts to make the volatile symbiote his own. His original pitch had been “a story told through the eyes of a boy on a road-trip wearing his father’s jacket, learning a thing or two about where his father picked up his scars and scuff-marks along the way.”
“I think the story interactions between Venom the symbiote, Venom — his father’s symbiote, Dylan’s own history and his attempt at finding a new equilibrium are all fascinating things to delve into as we tell this drama through an action-packed tense thriller with a hint of sci-fi, horror,” Ram V said at the time.
Ewing compared his interweaving narrative with Ram V as akin to playing a band, submitting that “every issue is a new single, every trade is an album, and Eddie and Dylan are our instruments.”
Dylan inherited the symbiote from his father in Venom #200. The original Venom is taking on a new role as the ruler of all symbiotes, following a victorious battle against the god Knull in the King in Black event.
Written by Ram V and Al Ewing with artwork by Bryan Hitch and inks by Andrew Currie, Venom #1 hits comics shops on Oct. 27.
