Marvel’s Thor Kills Off a Key MCU Character

Thor #20, by Donny Cates and Nic Klein, kills off a key Marvel Cinematic Universe character involved in Mjolnir’s creation.

Marvel Comics has provided CBR with an exclusive look at Thor #20, by Donny Cates, Nic Klein, Matt Wilson and VC’s Joe Sabino. In the preview, Thor discovers Eitri, the Forgemaster of Nidavellir, dead.

Thor #20 is the second issue in the five-part “God of Hammers” storyline. In Thor #19, the God of Thunder set out in pursuit of Mjolnir, having learned of a prophecy that the weapon would be used by the mysterious “God of Hammers” to cause destruction in the universe and kill the king of Asgard. This then brought him to an arena called the Gauntlet, where he retrieved his father, Odin. Together, they went to the Dwarves of Nidavellir in hopes of tracking down Mjolnir. However, just before they arrived, someone attacked the world with the powerful weapon, wiping the Dwarves out in the process.

Thor #20 opens with a look at the destruction that Mjolnir has wrought across the universe. Soon, the issue moves back to Thor, carrying the body of Eitri. The God of Thunder vows to get vengeance on the one who killed Eitri before Odin urges him forward, saying, “A king cannot rule from his knees, boy.”

Created by Alan Zelentz and Bob Hall, Eitri first appeared in 1983’s Thor Annual #11. The character played a key role in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, where he was played by Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones). In that film, Eitri and his Dwarves were responsible for the creation of the Infinity Gauntlet that Thanos used to snap away half the life in the universe. In addition to creating Mjolnir, Eitri also crafted Stormbreaker, which is Thor’s current weapon in the MCU.
