As Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson team up with another Captain America, they discover this new Sentinel of Liberty is a huge fan of Steve Rogers.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for United States of Captain America #3, on sale now from Marvel.
As Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson have embarked on a manhunt for a speedster supervillain wearing the mantle of Captain America, the two old friends and veteran superheroes have quickly discovered how expansive their Star-Spangled influence is from sea to shining sea. And after meeting other heroes who have stepped up to forge their own additions to the growing Captain America legacy in their own unique ways, Steve and Sam meet a new Captain America who quickly reveals himself to be Steve Rogers’ biggest fan as he helps the duo in confronting their supervillain quarry.
After chasing the supervillain Speed Demon through Texas, Steve and Sam’s journey takes them to New Mexico where they meet with a Native American man named Joe Gomez. Joe has been wearing his own variation of the Captain America costume but Steve and Sam concerned that this will make him a target of Speed Demon and his mysterious accomplice. The two villains have managed to stay one step ahead of the Captains America, hunting those that openly wear the stars and stripes. Undeterred by the two heroes’ warning, Joe shows Steve exactly how much he means to him, with a room in his home full of Captain America memorabilia. United States of Captain America #3 — by Christopher Cantwell, Dale Eaglesham, Matt Milla and VC’s Joe Caramagna — shows how unifying the Captain America symbol can be and it stretches farther back than Steve initially remembered.
United States of Captain America #3 includes a story by Darcie Little Badger, David Cutler and Roberto Poggi that shows the origins of the indigenous Sentinel of Liberty. While working on a construction site in Kansas City, Joe is attacked by the supervillain Bulldozer of the Wrecking Crew when he endangers his co-workers to send a message to the city’s mayor. While Joe keeps Bulldozer’s attention away from his friends, he nearly falls to his death until Steve Rogers arrives on the scene, in his usual Captain America regalia, and saves the day.
While Joe had been skeptical about the Star-Spangled Avenger before, the experience inspires him to reclaim the legacy of Captain America for the land’s indigenous population and honor his own culture, providing a superhero synthesis of the two.
Despite lacking any discernible superpowers or advanced training, Joe more than proves himself worthy of the Captain America mantle. When the assembled Captains America realize that Speed Demon is targeting a local gubernatorial candidate, Joe was willing to risk life and limb to stop the supervillain assassins. After enduring a nasty beating at the hands of Speed Demon and his partner Sin, the twisted daughter of the Red Skull, Joe still musters the strength to leave his hospital gurney to fight the supervillains, driving them into a retreat. And while Joe’s injuries are severe enough for him to be hospitalized, the indigenous Captain America will live to fight another day.
From a teenager personally inspired by Sam Wilson to fashion his own superhero costume and ride the rails to the Captain America of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania standing up for the downtrodden in Middle America, the Captain America legacy is in good hands as a new age of heroes stands ready. Joe Gomez is a Captain America whose roots in America itself run deeper than any other hero to wear the mantle, including Joe’s personal inspiration. And with the price of vigilance for America’s soul remaining high, Joe has just joined a group of heroes ready to defend the land to his dying breath.
