Marvel’s Newest Amazing Spider-Man Throws Fists with Morbius (Preview)

[ad_1]

Ben Reilly goes up against Morbius in The Amazing Spider-Man #78, putting the Beyond Corporation’s suit to the test against the vampire’s fangs.

Ben Reilly has his work cut out for him as he dodges the fangs and claws of Morbius in The Amazing Spider-Man #78.

A preview for Issue #78, written by Kelly Thompson and illustrated by Sara Pichelli and Jim Towe, shows Ben’s Spidey suit slowly binding itself to heal a nasty neck wound that he received from Morbius in the previous issue. After unleashing strands of webbing onto the face of his vampiric foe, Ben takes to the skyscrapers in an effort to tackle Morbius on higher ground.

Morbius, who has in the past created a serum from Peter Parker’s blood to curb his more violent tendencies, was spotted by Ben amidst a collection of dead bodies in the conclusion of Issue #77. He immediately began acting erratically when confronted and lunged at the new Spider-Man, sinking his fangs into Ben’s costume and putting its high-tech regenerative abilities to the test.

Ben assumed the role of Spider-Man with a new suit and the complete backing of the shadowy Beyond Corporation in The Amazing Spider-Man #75, the start of the “Spider-Man Beyond” story arc. While the full extent of the corporation’s plans for creating their own brand of web-slinger has yet to be revealed, Ben has thus far relished in the chance to step beyond the shadow of Peter Parker and truly become Spider-Man. The clone of Peter even briefly teamed up alongside his brother-in-arms for an encounter against the U-Foes in Issue #75.

The battle concluded with Peter grievously injured and hospitalized. Before he fell into a coma, Peter gave Ben his blessing to be Spider-Man, and future issues of the “Spider-Man Beyond” arc show the former Scarlet Spider tackling Kraven the Hunter, receiving training from the Daughters of the Dragon, fulfilling the dying wishes of Doctor Strange, butting heads with Miles Morales in Brooklyn and getting wrapped up in Devil’s Reign, an event spinning out from Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto’s run on Daredevil that will see the Kingpin unleashing fire and fury on superheroes all across New York City.

Meanwhile, Peter Parker will have his own problems to contend with from his hospital bed. A preview for December’s The Amazing Spider-Man #82 promises that he will eventually awaken from his coma and work alongside Mary Jane at McCarthy Medical Center to solve the disappearance of his roommate.

The Amazing Spider-Man #78 goes on sale Nov. 10 from Marvel.
