In The Death of Doctor Strange: Spider-Man #1, Ben Reilly steps up to assume the role of New York City’s magical guardian, with help from Black Cat.
Ben Reilly will answer the dying request of Doctor Strange as he emerges as the new Spider-Man in a one-shot tie-in to Marvel’s The Death of Doctor Strange event in September.
In an interview with Newsarama, The Death of Doctor Strange: Spider-Man writer Jed MacKay said the Sorcerer Supreme had tapped Peter Parker to follow in his footsteps as New York’s magical protector in the event of his death.
“Doctor Strange is dead,” MacKay said. “However, his obligations live on. All across New York City, there exist magical threats that Doctor Strange attended to, and with him gone, that duty now falls to Spider-Man. But the Spider-Man that is currently available is not the Spider-Man that Strange had been counting on, and now Ben Reilly races against time to keep New York’s weirdness under control and prove that he’s worthy of the title.”
Coming to Ben’s aid is an unusual ally — Black Cat, who MacKay said wanted to be there to witness the spectacle as Ben “crashes and burns.” The pair have tangoed in the past, even sharing a kiss in the pages of Spider-Man Unlimited #11, back in the ’90s when Ben last assumed the role of Spider-Man and grappled with his status as a clone of Peter Parker.
Ben Reilly will once again become Marvel’s premiere web-slinger in the upcoming “Spider-Man Beyond” storyline, which sees Peter seemingly hospitalized and on the verge of death. The story begins in Amazing Spider-Man #75 on Oct. 6.
Meanwhile, Death of Doctor Strange: Spider-Man #1 goes on sale in November. The Death of Doctor Strange five-issue limited series, exploring a Marvel Universe without the Sorcerer Supreme, begins on Sept. 22.
