Marvel announces a new Iron Fist series from Alyssa Wong and Michael YG featuring a mysterious replacement for Danny Rand.

Marvel has announced the new Iron Fist.

While the identity is still being kept under wraps, the dark-haired character is decidedly not Danny Rand, and he’ll debut in Alyssa Wong and Michael YG Iron Fist #1, the first in a five-issue miniseries. Jim Cheung’s cover art is below:

“It’s an incredible honor to introduce a new Iron Fist to the Marvel Universe,” Wong said. “I’m excited to delve into the comic’s rich mythos and build on it. What does it mean for someone to take up the mantle of the Iron Fist right now, today?”

“Working for Marvel is a dream come true, yet it was beyond any dream to be trusted to carry the legacy of Iron Fist,” YG added. “It is such an exciting new direction, I can’t wait for you to read all about it because I’m giving nothing less than my best efforts!”

The announcement comes after Marvel posted two major teasers hinting that the Living Weapon would never be the same. The first, entitled “Iron Fist No More,” showed Danny Rand ditching his famous green and yellow outfit in an alley garbage can a la Peter Parker’s temporary decision to retire in 1967’s Spider-Man #50. The second teaser, entitled “The Dragon Awakens,” showed a silhouette of an unknown figure wearing the Iron Fist dragon and gathering their chi for a series of powerful punches.

Danny Rand lost his Iron Fist powers in the finale of Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon, a six-issue series by Lara Hama, David Wachter, Neeraj Menon and Travis Lanham. The series focused on Danny as he raced across the world and followed the will of Quan Yin to defeat a legion of undead intent on destroying the dragons of the Seven Capital Cities of Heaven. Accompanying him were Luke Cage, his young protégé Pei and her pet dragon Gork.

Over the course of the series, Okoye from Black Panther made an appearance, and Danny and Pei bequeathed their Iron Fist powers to her in order to defeat the supervillain known as the Heirophant. In the aftermath of an intense battle, Okoye decided to give up these newfound abilities in order to keep her focus on Wakanda, and passed them on to Gork. The tiny dragon, currently undergoing a reincarnation process as an egg, will soon be reborn as Gork the Undying — a full-circle reference to Shou-Lao the Undying, the dragon that originally gave Danny Rand his powers.

Danny’s new place in the Marvel universe — as well as whether his retirement status will last — remains to be seen. Nevertheless, when asked by Luke Cage what he planned to do with his life in the last panel of Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon, Danny said he would “live it to the fullest.”

Iron Fist #1 goes on sale in February 2022 from Marvel Comics.
