Extreme Carnage: Omega revealed that one symbiote has a dangerous new superpower that gives it more bang for the buck.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Extreme Carnage: Omega, available now from Marvel Comics.
Over the course of Extreme Carnage, the killer symbiote has risen from the depths of the ocean to new heights. Carnage has made a gruesome bid for political power built around anti-symbiote sentiment in the wake of King in Black’s alien invasion, and Marvel’s heroic symbiotes have been two steps behind the entire time. Now that everything has culminated in one final attack, Flash Thompson’s Anti-Venom and his allies have been able to catch up to their quarry and put an end to the bloodshed.
And in Extreme Carnage: Omega #1, by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Manuel Garcia, Cam Smith, Guru-eFX, and VC’s Travis Lanham, Anti-Venom has just unleashed an explosive new power that could very well cement his place as the most powerful symbiote on Earth.
Over the past months, Carnage has amassed both a secret symbiote army and throngs of loyal human supporters, setting the two sides up for an epic confrontation. As Senator Krane begins his speech to the thousands of followers gathered together, Carnage reveals himself to the world by murdering him in gut-wrenching fashion before the other Life Foundation symbiotes continue the assault. Thankfully, Flash Thompson is already on the way with Silence and Toxin at his side. Each of these heroes has proven able to overcome Carnage’s influence, and all of them are formidable in their own right, but Flash Thompson has just unveiled a new ability that puts him in a class all his own.
For as long as they have been part of the Marvel Universe, symbiotes have been able to transform themselves into devastating weapons. Venom’s webs (or chains) are just the first instance of this, though each individual symbiote has their own most common forms. Carnage has his massive blades, Riot most often employs hammer hands or a mace, and Flash Thompson has apparently settled on massive firearms. Before Carnage can land a lethal strike on Tony Stark, Flash impressively unleashes a torrent of bullets from a gun-laden arm. Symbiote firearms aren’t anything entirely new to the Marvel Universe, with various forms of projectiles and even laser weapons having been seen previously, but this addition to Flash Thompson’s arsenal pushes his symbiote over the top.
The Anti-Venom symbiote’s origin was unlike anything that had come before it. First introduced in 2008’s Amazing Spider-Man #569 (by Dan Slott and John Romita Jr.), Anti-Venom was born of the remnants of the original Venom symbiote being bonded to Eddie Brock’s white blood cells as a side effect of Mister Negative’s powers. As a result of this, Anti-Venom has a number of unique abilities. Not only is Anti-Venom caustic to other symbiotes, but it is also relatively immune to the intense heat and sound which can be fatal to the rest of its kind. This coupled with the accelerated healing factor and total immunity from the effects of any poisons, drugs, or diseases makes Agent Anti-Venom one of the most formidable symbiotes in existence, and the latest addition to his repertoire is likely an even more important development.
Even if Carnage ultimately escaped the fray this time around, there is no question that Flash and his allies have left an unforgettable impression on the villain. All of Carnage’s meticulous planning and plotting certainly accomplished what he was hoping to in terms of galvanizing the public’s fears, but he is now facing someone both immune to and capable of wielding every other symbiote’s biggest weakness.
If Flash can refine what he has already done, or push his powers to new heights, Carnage most likely won’t stand a chance the next time they meet.
