Marvel’s Midnight Suns Doesn’t Use Loot Boxes, Will Have Cosmetic Microtransactions

[ad_1]

Marvel’s Midnight Suns confirms that the RPG will include cosmetic microtransaction that will have no bearing on in-game mechanics or balance.

Friaxis Games confirms that Marvel‘s Midnight Suns will include cosmetic microtransactions but that none of the game’s unlockables will be gated behind loot boxes.

When asked on Twitter about how Midnight Suns intends to implement monetization surrounding the game’s cosmetics and battle card system, Firaxis Games revealed that its turn-based RPG will include microtransactions. “Hey folks, regarding our battle card system, there are no loot boxes in Marvel’s Midnight Suns or related microtransactions to get more cards (i.e. Gamma Coils). We will have purely cosmetic character skins for purchase that do not affect game balance in any way.”

Firaxis Games was also quick to reassure fans that they would be able to unlock a host of “fresh” outfits by simply playing the game. A brief video was posted alongside this reply showing the game’s original character, the Hunter, in a variety of different costumes. Eagle-eyed fans were quick to spot Scarlet Witch’s mask make an appearance.

While microtransactions for aesthetic-only costumes and outfits in Midnight Suns will not impact the game mechanically, fans were more concerned about the game’s card system. In combat, players will be able to use a variety of powerful cards to interact with the battlefield and enemies. Through the game, players will need to build their collection, leading many to fear that Midnight Suns would include card packs that would require real-world money. Similar systems are available in online trading card games like Hearthstone and Magic: The Gathering Arena.

Despite reassurances that the game’s microtransactions will be purely cosmetics in nature, fans expressed disappointment that Midnight Suns included any at all. Many have criticised Firaxis Games for including microtransaction in a full-price single-player game.

Microtransactions and especially loot boxes are a controversial practice in the video game industry. Many free-to-play games make use of the systems to encourage players to spend money on a title, a practice that began infiltrating the AAA game industry in the early 2010s. While many companies implement microtransactions exclusively for cosmetics, loot boxes have recently come under fire from authorities due to their unknown factor. Players spend money on loot boxes not knowing their contents, leading many to link the practice to gambling.
