Marvel Comics’ current Darkhold storyline has reimagined several heroes, with Spider-Man’s biggest change being who he wound up marrying.
The Darkhold showed five heroes a warped reality where their lives could have been much different, with Spider-Man’s changing who he would marry and more.
Peter Parker has had many love interests in comics — Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson, Felicia Hardy and so on — with the hero eventually marrying Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21. Their marriage lasted in comics until the events of Spider-Man: One More Day, which saw their relationship stripped away by Mephisto and served as a soft reboot for Spider-Man. A preview for Darkhold: Spider-Man #1 reveals that had things gone differently, in another twisted reality, Peter would have married Gwen Stacy.
Gwen Stacy was Peter’s first true love up until she died, which serves as a defining aspect of Peter’s character being that he blames himself for her death. She was killed by the Green Goblin aka Norman Osborn within the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #121, a moment that inspired the ending to 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. If comic book history had played out differently as shown by the upcoming issue, it seems Peter would have stayed in a relationship with Gwen rather than being with Mary Jane.
However, there is more than meets the eye in this preview, and this is not a perfect world for Spider-Man – especially when it comes to Gwen Stacy. Peter’s inner dialogue discusses the “Unraveling,” which causes buildings and even people to just fall apart, with the wall crawler using his webbing to hold everything and everyone together. If you look closely at one of the preview pages, though Gwen is looking in the mirror, her fingers appear green, implying that the reflection shown is not displaying true reality.
Spider-Man is the last of the five heroes who read from the Darkhold to receive a solo one-shot giving them an altered reality. Iron Man, Blade, Black Bolt and the Wasp each received an issue as well, with altered histories going as dark as Janet Van Dyne killing Hank Pym instead of ending their relationship. All of these one-shots and the issue Darkhold: Alpha #1 will culminate in Darkhold: Omega #1, which is set to release in January 2022. The preview and solicitation for the Spidey-centric story can be found below.
