Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye is met with predominantly favorable reviews ahead of its premiere on Disney+.
The reviews for Hawkeye are in — and Marvel Studios’ latest Disney+ original series looks to have (mostly) hit the mark with critics.
Ahead of its two-episode premiere on Nov. 24, Hawkeye is sitting pretty with a “Fresh” rating of 88 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. While audience reviews are obviously not in yet, the series has amassed 48 professional reviews at the time of writing, with the “Fresh” reviews currently outnumbering the “Rotten” ones seven-to-one.
Rotten Tomatoes’ official consensus explains that while Hawkeye “starts slowly,” its “street-level action is a refreshing change of pace for the [Marvel Cinematic Universe] — and the chemistry between its leads sparkles even when the plot lags.”
The chemistry between lead characters Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) seems to be a major talking point among critics. Said reviewer Perri Nemiroff, “Hawkeye rocks a great mix of playfulness and a sense of real danger. It’s also hard to imagine better casting for Kate Bishop than Hailee Steinfeld. Her timing and tone are always spot on and her chemistry with Jeremy Renner is a major highlight.”
Nemiroff’s sentiments are echoed by Therese Lacson of The Beat, who wrote, “Hawkeye refreshes a character that had been pushed to the sidelines with undeniable chemistry and an incredibly promising new leading character.” Meanwhile, CBR’s own Meagan Damore described Hawkeye as a series “[s]tuffed with humor and heart” that “has a lot to offer MCU fans new and old.”
That said, not every single review for Hawkeye is positive, with some criticizing the show’s pacing. “Even a show that approaches its episodic run like an extra-long movie owes the audience a bit more momentum than this, especially when those installments roll out weekly,” wrote CNN‘s Brian Lowry. Nevertheless, while Hawkeye isn’t quite a bullseye in the eyes of critics, it appears to have landed firmly within the red rings.
Set after the events of the 2019 film Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye show largely takes its cues from Matt Fraction and David Aja’s defining run on Marvel Comics’ Hawkeye title. The Disney+ original series sees the original Hawkeye, Clint Barton, take on a protégé in the form of Kate Bishop, whom he trains to take up the mantle. Hawkeye will also introduce the Marvel superhero Maya Lopez/Echo to the MCU, with the character set to get her own spinoff series on Disney+.
Hawkeye premieres on Disney+ on Nov. 24.
