The board game adaption of the Marvel Zombies universe rises through Kickstarter’s ranks to become one of the site’s most successful projects.

The official board game adaption of Marvel Zombies concludes a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, landing it within the crowdfunding site’s top five most backed projects.

According to its official Kickstarter page, the tabletop interpretation of Marvel’s undead heroes managed to earn a whopping $9,032,583 USD over just 16 days. Just under 29,000 supporters pledged to make the game a reality with an average donation of $311.75. Beyond smashing its original goal of just $500,000, Marvel Zombies is now in the top five most successful Kickstarter projects of all time, following the likes of Avatar LegendsFrosthaven and Kingdom Death: Monster 1.5. Fans who backed the initiative can expect to receive their copy of the game in June 2023.

Anyone looking to experience this grim and gory corner of the Marvel universe from the comfort of their tables can look forward to a cooperative board game designed for 1-6 players. Gamers can choose to play as either the undead looking to satisfy their hunger or heroes trying to survive the rapidly spreading virus while also searching for a cure to save the world. Multiple versions of the game were included in the Kickstarter; the most basic level netted backers a copy of the project while more advanced versions include bonuses like the X-Men Resistance expansion pack and a “Gigantic Galactus” game piece. The standard version includes 87 character pieces, 136 cards, 9 double-sided tiles and plenty of additional parts.

Board game enthusiasts familiar with Zombicide will undoubtedly recognize many of the systems used in Marvel Zombies. Players will need to fight back against constantly growing hordes of the undead, which are controlled by the game itself with a simple yet effective AI system. As survivors grow stronger by defeating more enemies and completing quests, they’ll unlock new abilities which will in turn trigger more enemies to spawn. The longer the session continues, the harder it becomes to stay alive and eventually claim victory.

Marvel Zombies started its visceral life in 2006 as a five-issue limited run. Written by Robert Kirkman with art from Sean Phillips and colours by June Chung, it was an instant success amongst fans looking for a grimmer take on the Marvel universe. The series’ popularity resulted in multiple sequels and spin-offs, eventually going on to inspire an episode of the popular What If…? animated series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
