CBR talks with writer Cody Ziglar about his alternate take on fan-favorite Marvel character Miles Morales as he adopts the shield of Captain America.
In late-2021, Marvel Comics announced a five-issue comic series What If…Miles Morales centered on the titular young hero. The Marvel series asks, What would happen if fan-favorite Spider-Man elected to take on the mantle of a hero other than Peter Parker? The premise of the first two issues has already been revealed, with What If… Miles Morales #1 focusing on what would happen if Miles Morales chose to take up the shield of Captain America instead of the webs of Marvel’s most iconic spider-themed hero.
Each issue of What If…Miles Morales features a different creative team. Its first issue is written by Cody Ziglar and with artwork by Paco Medina, two creators who both previously worked on Amazing Spider-Man. CBR had the opportunity to preview a few pages from the first issue and field a few questions to Ziglar about what fans can expect from his story.
CBR: What If…Miles Morales #1 answers the question of what would happen if this fan-favorite Marvel character took on the mantle of Captain America instead of Spider-Man. What excites you the most about being able to explore Miles in the role of the Sentinel of Liberty?
Cody Ziglar: One of the things I know most about Steve Rogers is that his moral compass is always pointing north. You just know he’s willing to make sacrifices for the greater good and will always fight against the bullies of society. I think, emotionally and character-wise, that principle has always been in line with what I’ve seen and thought about Miles. Those are the foundational truths of his being. Even if you swap the radioactive spider for the Super-Soldier serum, those elements remain unchanged.
How is Miles Morales different from Steve Rogers in his handling of the iconic title of Captain America?
Miles Morales is definitely greener and less experienced than Steve Rogers. I think that’s partly due to his origin story. Steve volunteered while Miles gained his spider-abilities by accident. While Miles understands the weight the name carries, he’s still figuring this stuff out as he goes. Also, he’s still a kid! He’s much more lighthearted in his approach to being a hero than Steve, but he still takes the job seriously.
Starling seems to be a major part of Miles’ life in his role as Captain America. How has their relationship changed in this story?
Tiana and Miles are definitely much more comfortable with one another from the beginning than their 616 counterparts. I like to think this version of Miles was a lot less nervous to be around her than the one we’ve seen previously. But that doesn’t necessarily save him from being on the receiving end of her jokes when he makes a mistake.
What one moment in your story are you most excited for fans to see?
There’s a particular moment towards the end of the issue that expands on how big this new Miles universe might be. It was not only super fun to write but seeing the art by Paco Medina was the icing on the cake!
Why was Miles chosen to take on the role of Captain America in your story? Why not Peter Parker or another hero?
In my story, Miles was truly a cause of being in the right place at the right time. I like to think that there’s a moral component as to whether or not the serum will work well on someone, and I think that plays a part in it for Miles as well.
How is Miles different from the other heroes who have taken up the shield?
He has the freshest fade.
Are there any other characters that you feel deserve a chance to take on the challenge of becoming Captain America?
I’d love to see America Chavez or Riri Williams take up the mantle!
What If…Miles Morales #1 is written by Cody Ziglar and with artwork by Paco Medina. The issue will be on sale from Marvel Comics on March 2.
