Marvel Teases the Break-Up of Spider-Man and Mary Jane

[ad_1]

Peter Parker’s on-again, off-again relationship with Mary-Jane Watson seems to be taking a turn for the worst in April’s Amazing Spider-Man relaunch.

Peter Parker’s relationship with Mary-Jane might not make it through Marvel Comics’ new Amazing Spider-Man series.

In April, Amazing Spider-Man relaunches with a new series coinciding with the character’s 60th anniversary, which comes with some major changes. Marvel Comics’ promotional material for Amazing Spider-Man #2 suggests that the hero’s love life is about to take a turn for the worst in the series. Legendary Spider-Man artist John Romita Jr.’s cover teases a troubled Peter and Mary-Jane and asks, “the best couple in comics is done?”

Peter first met MJ in Amazing Spider-Man #42 (written by Stan Lee, with artwork by John Romita Sr. and lettering by Sam Rosen). Though Peter soon entered a relationship with Gwen Stacy, he developed a close friendship with MJ, who remained a constant figure in his life. Shortly after Gwen’s passing, Peter and MJ’s friendship blossomed into a full-fledged romance. The two were wed in 1987 and stayed that way for 20 years until they sacrificed their marriage in the highly divisive storyline, “One More Day.” Eventually, during Nick Spencer’s tenure on Amazing Spider-Man, the two were brought back together.

Marvel’s new Amazing Spider-Man series will be helmed by writer Zeb Wells and comic book artist John Romita Jr. While details concerning the first storyline are scarce, the solicitation has teased answers to the question  “What did Peter do?” and claims that through his actions, Spidey will burn his bridges with the Avengers, Fantastic Four and even Aunt May.

Before Peter embarks on this new chapter and commits the mysterious and supposedly heinous act, he’ll have to take back the mantle of Spider-Man from his clone, Ben Reilly. While Peter recovered from injuries he received in defense of New York City, Ben took on the title and began working with the Beyond Corporation as their privately-owned Spider-Man. Ben’s tenure as the aptly-named “Spider-Man Beyond” will end in March’s Amazing Spider-Man #93, written by Wells and drawn by Patrick Gleason, with a final fight between Peter and Ben.
