Marvel teases a summer crossover storyline between the X-Men, the Avengers and the Eternals for 2022, saying “Judgement Day is Coming!”
The X-Men, Avengers and Eternals will collide in 2022.
Marvel Comics has released a teaser image featuring the logos for the X-Men, Avengers and Eternals and the text “Judgement Day is Coming!,” hinting that these franchises will clash in summer 2022. As three of the most popular properties in Marvel’s publishing line, the teams are often at the forefront of major events, making them ripe for a crossover. It is also worth noting that the timing of this potential event coincides with the 10-year anniversary of the last major conflict between Marvel’s premiere superhero teams, Avengers Vs. X-Men.
In 2012, Marvel released Avengers Vs. X-Men, written by Jason Aaron, Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction and Jonathan Hickman, with art by John Romita Jr., Olivier Coipel and Adam Kubert. In it, the Phoenix Force returned to Earth, causing the Avengers and X-Men to go to war over the fate of the Phoenix’s power. The core storyline unfolded in a 12-part mini-series that caused a ripple effect throughout the rest of their publishing line, ushering in one of their most commercially successful eras, Marvel NOW! This “Judgement Day” teaser harkens back to that event while teasing at the inclusion of even more titanic heroes, making it likely that the publisher intends to make history repeat itself.
In the aftermath of AvX, Jason Aaron continued to explore the Phoenix Force across various titles. It factored heavily into his run on Thor and, most recently, has been a recurring plot point in his Avengers series. There, Aaron revealed that the original Phoenix was Odin’s lover and Thor’s true birth mother, shaking the God of Thunder to his core. Additionally, the Phoenix Force chose a new host, giving its power to Echo. However, since she is not on the Avengers roster, her status as a solo hero has put her at odds with others.
After an explosive 2021, the Eternals will continue to grow in the new year. However, this expansion will bring them into direct conflict with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. In March, Eternals #10 will see the team clash with the Avengers. Marvel’s cover for the issue shows Icarus and Captain Marvel fighting above Avengers Mountain, teasing that their relationship will be less than friendly when the two teams meet.
2022 already looks to be a landmark year of the X-Men. In March, Marvel will relaunch several titles to coincide with “Destiny of X,” a new status quo that will see the X-Men pursuing their potential futures. The line is designed with new fans in mind, beginning with Kieren Gillen and Lucas Werneck’s Immortal X-Men. The team is also set to be focused on in Marvel’s Free Comic Book Day offering, titled Avengers/X-Men #1, which seemingly lays the foundation for “Judgement Day.”
