Ghost Rider: Kushala Infinity Comic #1’s Olivia Oberta is new to the Marvel Universe, but the Spirit of Vengeance has been in her family generations.

Every new Ghost Rider in the Marvel Universe comes from a complicated family. After all, the Spirit of Vengeance only makes itself available to people in particularly challenging times. Taboo, B. Earl, Guillermo Sanna, Jordie Bellaire, and VC’s Joe Sabino’s Ghost Rider: Kushala Infinity Comic #1 seems to hint that a young woman named Olivia Oberta is about to become the newest Ghost Rider. While much about Olivia remains mysterious, her family history suggests that she will be more than capable of taking up the hellacious mantle.
As the narrator of Ghost Rider: Kushala Infinity Comic #1, Olivia explains that she is the great-great-great-great-great granddaughter of Kushala, a Native American woman who became the Spirit of Vengeance after the army murdered her family along with the rest of her tribe. After becoming the Ghost Rider, Kushala set out to study the mystic arts and eventually became Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme and fought a battle with Doctor Doom that almost brought about the end of the world. Now, Olivia continues her family legacy of cosmic crusading by working as a paranormal journalist for J Jonah Jameson’s Threats & Menaces magazine. She spends her days riding her motorcycle around Los Angeles and helping take care of her family while investigating the unexplainable.
Olivia is researching a story connected to her late uncle Edgar called “The Pluto Project.” According to Edgar and Olivia’s research, the Pluto Project was a top-secret government operation that revolved around Pluto’s moon, which seemed to suggest that the moon was actually a portal to the dimension most commonly known as the afterlife. The key to learning more about the project is the journal of Jeffrey McKracken, an Indiana Jones-esque explorer who vanished in the 1920s and also turns out to be Olivia’s distant cousin. She acquires the journal and a rare photograph of McKracken from an old family friend and takes it to the Threats & Menaces office to share with her research partner Liam.
Unfortunately, Liam isn’t the trustworthy reporter Olivia believes he is. The end of Ghost Rider: Kushala Infinity Comic #1 reveals that Liam is actually working with Doctor Doom and that he has been spying on Olivia. Who knows how long the Cleric of Doom has been spying on his coworker, but he is in a position to give the villain McKracken’s journal before Olivia has even had an opportunity to look at it. Doom’s interest in Olivia’s work and her family’s connection to the Pluto Project suggests that the project might be related to Doom’s ancient feud with Kushala. One thing is for certain though, Marvel’s mad scientist believes that his “hour of triumph approaches,” which can only mean bad news for anyone who gets in his way.
While Olivia is clearly a capable person, if she’s going to have to defend herself from Victor Von Doom, she might need some help from the Spirit of Vengeance. The danger Doom represents might be the push that sends her into Marvel’s supernatural realm. Luckily, Kushala has traveled through time in the past, so hopefully, she will be able to assist Olivia in her journey which promises to take her to Hell and back.
